STICKS IN MUD OFF FISHERMEN'S WHARF * Wilhelmina Skirts Too Close to Beach and Comes to a Full Stop New Steamer Bound on Maiden Voyage to Honolulu Is Held Prisoner for Hours f HE Matson naviga tion company's new steamer Wllhel mina. Captain Peter Johnson, which started yesterday- Jon its maiden voy age to Honolulu, left the Matson pier on time and in flying: style and had a triumphal prog ress down the bay until about 150 yards beyond Fish ', ermen's wharf, when the liner stuck its snout in a mudbank and came to a full stop. The Wilhelmina stayed there until the tide rose again and did not get out of the harbor until nearly midnight. The vessel was not at any time in danger, as the hull rested evenly in the soft mud. Captain Johnson made no wireless explanations as- to why he steered a course so close to the shore, but it was not altogether necessary, as Captain Matson, president of the corii pany. was on the bridge with him when the vessel took the mud. The filling in of land on the' other side of Fishermen's wharf has forced up quite a mudbank for some distance out and at low tide there is not sufficient depth there for a ship of the Wllhel mina's draft. One of the Pacific Coast steamship company's big liners spent an hour on the same «mudbank some months ago. The Wilhelmina might have got olf yesterday in a few minutes but for the fact that almost as soon as she struck the barkentine Argo, which was anchored close in and inside of which the Wilhelmina had passed, swung around ahead of the steamer. The tide, although low when the Wil helmina stuck, was still falling:, and when the revenue cutter Golden Gate an<l Crowley launch Xo. 7 tried to move the big steamer a little later they found that me mud had a stronger grip than tliev could break. T*he Wilhelmina is the first of the Mat Eon steamers to carry a surgeon. Dr. Lv H. Schwerin, who holds that po sition on the liner, held an acting com mission in the navy for a time. He ac companied the torpedo flotilla that came to this coast ahead of the Atlantic fleet, but resigned before reaching this port. Roach was engaged to make an investigation, when one of the supports in the Key Route slip settled down a foot. He found that the churning of water by; the ' ferry steamers had washed away the mud from the piles on which the concrete rests and that the teredo had riddled the piles. The same condition prevails in all the slips and steps will be taken at once to remedy the weakness. Oak Lining for Ferry Slip* The Dieckman hardwood company yesterday suggested to the hafoor com missioners the advisability of lining all its ferry slips with oak planking and offered to furnish the material at a reasonable figure. The Southern Pacific uses oak In its Oakland slips and it is said to have proved very satisfactory.
