Morton, arrived tyesterday from the 'far east crowded with passengers and bearing a rich cargo. Lyinjr along side pier 44, the Mongolia looks | steady and immov able as the wharf to which it is tied. For five days dur ing: the run from Yokohama to Hon olulu the liner gave a realistic imita tion of an intoxi cated chicken. The big ship, in the grip of a higher sea than anybody on board had ever seen before, pitched and tossed, rolled and writhed, staggered and shook and gen erally behaved more like a. saucy cat boat in a gale than a stately liner. 1 It has long been the boast of the | Mongolia's officers that the heaviest sea affected the liner so little that table racks were a superfluous equipment. During thos« five days even table racks would not keep the dishes from hurdling into the passengers' laps. The host of sea legs played their owners false and the man who had crossed the Pacific 40 timfs and never been seasick had to take refuge in the old adage, •The exception proves the rule." The tail end of a typhoon was re sponsible for the big stir up, and if the operator? on ships equipped with wire less h»ard anything unusual when the I storiii was over they m»v now learn i that it was the sigh of relief that j welled up from the decks of the Mon golia. The Mongolia was detained in quar antine only about 10 minutes. Dr. Hugh S. Cumming, formerly chief quarantine officer at tins port, was a passenger on ! the liner and had all the work of in spection finished when Doctor Trotter land his assistants boarded the ship soon after the anchor was let go. Doc tor cuinming has been stationed for four years at Yokohama. Hl6 tour of duty there is finished and before being assigned to another post he expects to enjoy an extended leave, part of which ho will spend in California. Mrs. Cum j ming and their children returned on j the Chiyo Maru and have been staying ;with relatives in Piedmont. Another passenger on the liner was j Captain C. B. T. Moore. United States j navy, who was relieved of command of I the armored cruiser Colorado at Manila on account of ill health. He is better ! now, but is under orders to report at the Mare island hospital, \u25a0where the I navy doctors will "survey" him and j pronounce upon his fitness for duty. The Mongolia brought 352 passengers ! and £,32*J tons of cargo. The freight I included S7l bales of raw silk, 11.047 | rolls of matting. 55,917 mats of rice. j 6.424 bags of copra and 716 cases of j curios. Will Equip Fleet With Wireless The Union oil company has decided to equip its fleet of tankers with wire less and orders have been placed for outfits for the steamers Pectan; Santa Maria. Santa Hlta and Lansing. The • apparatus is now being installed on I the Lansing and the other ships will j be equipped at the first favorable op ; portunity. The work is being done by the United wireless company. Amiral Duperre, which left here Xd • vember 15, arrived yesterday at Dun i kirk. The tup Defiance, Captain Trapp, re 1 turned yesterday from Eureka, where j the Defiance towed the British ship ! Hougomont from this port. Receipts of lumber yesterday by sea j amounted to 1,343.000 feet. <»hlp Jabex Howe* Sold Seattle. Feb. 24. — The ship Jabez j Howe*, owned by C.
