22 WELL KNOWN TUG TO BE A WHALER Fearless Is Chartered by Tyee Company and Is Being Made Ready for New Work HE tug Fearless, one of the finest and most powerful of ocean going tugs, is being' con yerted into a whaler. The well known towboat has been chartered by the Barneson & Hibbord compans' for the Tyee com pany, and will be ready to start for Alaska, about '.the middle of March. The Fearless \u25a0will look nu>re like a Central American battleship than a peaceful towboat when the Union iron works has com pleted the work of conversion. A big whale gun is being installed in the bow and the tug is being equipped with winches ana other gear for the hand 3ing of the leviathan game after the pun has reduced it to inanimate "none and blubber. Whaling, as followed by the Tyee • ompany, is entirely different from the whaling of old. The whale _ is not chased in small boats and killed with harpoons thrown by hand or from port able guns. The big gun in the bow of the whaler does the killing, and when the whale is dead the steamer takes the body in tow and lands it alongside the shore station. Only the wiggle of the whale's tail is wasted at one of these stations, and ;my old kind of wliaJe is welcome. The bone is saved, also the whalebone, the blubber is converted into oil, and what can not be used for any other purpose is made into fertilizer. The Crowley Launch Win* A towing contest held yesterday in tiie Vallejo street slip resulted in a .incisive victory for Crowley launch No. 14. of which Willy Figarl is cap lain, crew and chief engineer. The other launch in the competition was the North American dredging com pany's Wink, which is equipped with a 350 horsepower gasoline engine. -\o. 14s engine is reckoned at only 125 horsepower. The launches were lashed together, st«rn to stern. They both started their engines together and slowly but surely the Wink dragged Hi*' struggling 14 out to the pierhead liii.-. Figari then discovered that No. 14 had a few notches left. He threw on ihe full power and a minute later XOi 3 4 was dragging the Wink back to the starting place. Tom Crowley bought Figari a new «>ii >-an as a mark of his appreciation of No. 14's victory. Cascade Will Sail Today The steamer Cascade, recently bought by ihe Interisland steamship company, will sail this afternoon for Honolulu. The Cascade is in command of Cap tain James Rudden, who recently re signed a chief officer's job in the Pa cific Mail service. Rudden was with the Pacific Mail company for more than 16 years and was chief officer of the Korea shortly before he resigned. The Cascade is being loaded at pier 38 by the Matson navigation company. The situation of the steamer is known, but the depth* of water, has forbidden attempts to sal vage. The plan proposed is to lift the vessel with a huge metal" seine. .
