The shrewd suspicion that 1 the most powerful speculative forces which had sold heavily at the high levels last week had withdrawn their benev olent control of the market and were not averse even to see prices recede again was harbored in the minds of the professional element. This helped on the decline. The bulk of the pales were ascribed to sources outside of New York, mostly western speculative centers. Greater confidence was professed about the stock ex change in the prospects of settle ment of labor troubles, but the outside selling seemed to be prompted partly by uneasiness over the ultimate outcome of the wage controversies which are so numerous in the railroad world. Th«» sharp break in prices yes terday in itself induced some fur ther liquidation by timid holders and by those called on to put up additional margin. Signs of bear activity were plainly seen. These included a revival of reports of ,J. f. Morgan's ill health and al leged anxiety over 1 the physical condition of the king of Kngland. The pressure to sell United States steel was a sympathetic in fluence. The publication of the pamphlet report of the corpora tion disclosed the favorable de tails of the year's operations which furnished the avowed mo tives for the latest advance in the stock. The elaborate details of the report offered no striking additions to the main outline as already known. The digestion of the fact! of the steel report and the needs of the uncovered shorts contributed to the effective rally of the latter part of the day. Much of that was lost before the closing, which was weak. ";. J i" Interior exchange moved in fa vor of Xew York. Rates for time loans, however, were firmly held. • Bonds were heavy. Total sales, par value. $2,606,000. United States bonds were un changed on call.
