April I.— Mr. and Mrs. Brace Hayden have sent out cards for the marriage of their daughter. Miss S<-villa Hayden, and Clarence Stjuey, on the evening of Tuesday, April 12, in >t. Paul's Episcopal church. The wed ding will be the most notable of the earijr month. Several hundred guests have been included in the church cere mony, the service to be read by Rev. Alexander Allen. Mrs. Reginald Fos ter and Mrs. Maxwell Taft will attend their sister as matrons of honor. Mrs. Foster coming on from her home on the Atlantic coast for the wedding. The bridesmaids will be Miss Helen Allen and Miss Chrissie Taft. Little Betsy Taft will be a flower jrirl. Herbert Shuey will serve his hrother as best man. The ushers will be James Keleher, Leslie Taylor, Cur tire Hayden and John A. Brewer. Miss Hayden has chosen a charming effect in orchid shades for the gowns of her bridal attendants. After their honeymoon Shuey and his bride will for a time live at the Hayden family residence in Vernon heights. JBvߣ On the evening of- Saturday, April 9. Mr. and Mrs. Hayden will preside at a d'nner. the members of their daughter's bridal party being the pruests. Mrs. J. H. Mrs. Northrup has not been heard in gong recital for more than a year. As soprano soloist of the First Congrega tional church Mrs. Northrup has won an important place in musical affairs in the west* on account of her splendid work in the great oratorios. As direc tor of the popular and successful Eu rydice club Mrs. Northrup has achieved results, which are evidenced by the eight years of concerts which that or ganization has contributed to the mu sical life of this city. Mine. Kileen O'Moore, a violinist of ability, who l\an recently estabHshe? her home here, will be presented at the Northrup recital. Miss Mildred Turner will be accompanist. The concert has been arranged undor the direction of Edward B. Jordan, manager of the Musical exchange. FORMER GRIDIRON STAR REVISITS THE CAMPUS Elvezib Mini, Famous Halfback, on a Furlough BERKELEY, April 1. — Elvezio Mini, dashing halfhack in the old game and university star for three years, has re turned to this city from the Philip pines, where he has been connected with the constabulary for five years. He now holds the rank of captain . in the service, from which he is absent on a furlough until September. Mini was much interested ln the drilling of the cadets, which he said was great ly improved. SCHOOL BOARD WILL ASSIST WITH CENSUS OAKLAND, April 1. — In taking: the echbol census of Alameda county the federal authorities will co-operate with County Superintendent of Schools Frlck. Blanks explaining the purpose of the federal census were mailed to all the school principals of the county today, asking their help in making the census complete and accurate. Accompanying the blanks were joint letters from Burke and Frick, asking that the circular b^.read to pupils, and that the pupils be instructed to inform their parents of the coming of the cen sus enumerators. Against »his seven competi tors" the Berkeley boy; won first honors and the correcting board declared that his average was extremely high in all the subjects ' in which he was exam ined. Young Atkins, whose . widowed mother,; Mrs. Louise. Atkins, was for merly a school teacher of Oroville,- has gained' the furtlter, distinction of hav ing worked his way through school. He is ,at present night clerk at the Alta Vista apartments, at the corner of Telegraph avenue and Bancroft way, but finds time to engage in his studies as a senior at the Berkeley, high school. He stands at the head of his class in mathematics and will graduate in De cember. Next January Atkins will take .the entrance examinations to "West Point at the Presidio and he also will be examined as to. his physical condition. The. friends of Atkins declare" that there is no fear that he will not again easily pass the grilling tests' and be admitted to "Uncle Sam's training school for officers in June. . \ Atkins was born in Hurleton,! Butte county, and hii3 lived in -this city for the last six years with his mother. He attended the Mount Tamalpais military academy at San Rafael for a year.; \u25a0 OBJECT TO CROWING OF ROOSTERS IN BERKELEY Petitioners Ask Council to Ban ish Domestic Birds BERKELEY, April 1. — Alleging that the early morning "songs" of the roost ers in Berkeley were not conducive to sleep, a number of petitioners asked the city council this morning to prohibit the keeping of chickens within the city limits. The council decided to ask for bids for an automobile fire engine. On ac count of the lack of funds the engine probably will not be bought until after July. Justice Robert Edgar was granted a vacation of two weeks beginning today. He will travel in the northern part of the state. Judge R. B. Smith of Napa today dismissed the con test she instituted against the will of her aunt, Mrs. Elizabeth " B. Hitchcock, and the charges Mrs. Smith made against Assemblyman Henry N. Beatty of San Francisco will not be heard in court. Mrs. Hitchcock was more ' than 70 years of age when she died. She was the widow of Daniel Hitchcock, -for many years agent of the Union Pacific railroad company on this coast. Be fore her death she gave Beatty valu able property, and her will, gave him the bulk of what she had left, so that in all he got about $75,000, . Mrs. Smith was given a legacy of $15,000, and Beatty said today that the compromise gave her little more. aged 4!) years 1 . month . and 27 days. Aprl I.— Suit for dam ages for injuries sustained when he fell out of a fugitive captive balloon a week ago was begun today by Herbert E. Hedderich against M. Goldstein and Jane Doe Goldstein, hi 3 wife, raputed owners of the balloon in which the plaintiff took the trip. Hedderich wants $2,535. The balloon had made several ascen sions at Franklin and Fifteenth streets previous to the time Hedderich went up in it. With him were John L. Angelleh and Fred Deckard. A 1.200 foot steel cable held it to a stationary engine, which lowered it to the ground. "While the three were up' in the gas bag the cable fouled a live wire of the Oakland gas. light and heat compnay carrying 4.000 volts. It was cut in tw» and the balloon sailed away, propelled across Lake Merritt by a high wind. It landed in Fourth avenue terrace, two or three miles aw»y from the plac© where it escaped.
