12 GRAFT PROSECUTOR ASKS EDITOR'S AID District Attorney Challenges Pittsburg Writer to Appear , Before Grand Jury PITTSBURG. Pa., April 7. — District Attorney WUlia'm A. Blakeley issued a general invitation tonight for residents of Allegheny county to appear before the grand jury to contribute any se crets they may hold about grafting in PUtsburg. The invitation is especially directed toward Alexander P. Moore, editor of the Pittsburg Leader, which, in an edi torial today, charged that a prominent man, known to the writer of the edi torial, was still to be implicated in the graft scandals as the real "man higher up." INVITATION TO EDITOR The district attorney tonight save out the following statement: I have received a great many anonymous communications charg ing certain individuals are impli cated in the craft scandals, and in addition I notice in an afternoon paper a .Jefinite charge against a "man higher up." I desire to in vite any individual of Allegheny county to come before the grand Jury tomorrow morning and I will guarantee ample opportunity to testify. This invitation is directed to A. P Moore, editor of th«» Pittsburg Leader, in particular. He has pub licly dared me. upon more than one occasion, to do certain things. I now accept his challenge without condition, and challenge him to produce all his evidence before the grand jury. I do this in justice to the people cf Allegheny county, who have the right to know the full and com plete lengths to which municipal corruption has descended, and I trust Moorp f-an find no excuse to decline this most urgent request. A letter to Moore requesting his present before the grand jury tomor row also was given out. SLEUTHS FOLLOW PBOSECL'TOH District Attorney Blakeley, in dis cusdng his trip to New York city, said that while there he was followed day and night by detectives. The grand jury made no presentment today, but that the inquisitors were Ftillbusy with the bank ordinance cases was evidenced by the presence of J. P. Kuhn, president of the Second national bank. Attorn^y^W. B. Rogers, personal counsel for V. "S. HofTstot of ICew York, indicted yesterday on charges of brib ery and conspiracy, left for New York tonight to take up with his client the matter of extradition. It is said that he promised the dis trict attorney to inform him by wire tomorrow of Hoffetot's decision. S. P. C. C. J. White, shows that a year of activity has been passed by the organization, which devotes its energies to the care of children. The scope of the society's work is euccinctly shown in the following sum mary of its work for the year: Complaints received, 167; children in volved. 3,314; children relieved. 1,849; children placed in institutions, 404; children placed in families, 37; chil dren returned to parents, 75; children taken to juvenile court. 881; prosecu tion of adults, 118; convictions, 81; dis missals, 4; cases settled out of court, 615; persons released from custody on probation, 68; persons to whom advice or Information was given, 12; persons warned, 1,279; cases referred to Asso ciated Charities, 25; to Catholic hu mane bureau, 16; to Eureka benevo lent society. 2; to probation officers, 13; to district attorney, 2; permits to board children granted, 148; denied, 12; re voked, 4; permits to keep maternity e&natoriums granted, 2; denied, 6; mov ing pictures approved, 1,226; modified, 43; condemned, 25. LUTHERAN CHURCH SYNOD OBSERVES ANNIVERSARY California synod of the Lutheran church celebrated its nineteenth anni versary with a banquet at the First Lutheran church Wednesday evening. It was under the auspices of the of ficers of the church, the ladies' aid and the missionary societies, and In honor of John Everdlng. one of the orgaan lzer* of the synod and Its first treas urer.
