There was a general conviction about the stock exchange that the advance had the assent, if not the active co-operation, of the finan cial groups most influential in market movements. The move ment in United States Steel was the most effective factor in con veying this impression. Bankers and corporation rep resentatives expressed themselves hopefully of the prospects for business and of the good effects of the delay in the decision of the anti-trust cases. It was noticeable that the cop per stocks shared in the advance, although it had been taken for granted that the contemplated merger would be held in abeyance until the anti-trust cases define the permissible field for such a merger. The operations which advanced prices were concentrated in char acter, and did not appear to come from scattered sources, the belief prevailing that orders were exe cuted on a large scale for account of the powerful capitalists who attempt to influence and to lead market movements with the pur pose of attracting a miscellaneous following, depending on that for the profitable marketing of their accumulations. A factor in encouraging opera tions in stocks was a lightening of the pressure on New York banking reserves. The United States treasury has been making the monthly disbursement of pen sion money, and the subtreasury operations contribute a daily bal ance to the New York banks from this cause. The placing with for eign purchasers of railroad note issues has helped to relax the for eign exchange market and to check the outflow of gold. The immediate weather news from the winter wheat regions was ignored today, and cheerful views were held of the aggregate yield of the crops promised under the incentive of the high prices prevailing. Estimates of the heavy acreage in contemplation for the next cotton crop and the spring planting were an clem-ent in the feeling. Final prices were sustained near the best in face of some realizing. Bonds were irregular. Total sales (par value), 52,590,000. United States bonds were un changed on call. \u25a0 ~.~~ .~s~- Col So r&ext 4%s 9S Union Pacific 45.. 100% Del & Hud cv 4s. 99% Do cv 4s 108% Den & Rio G 4s. 95 Do Ist & ref 4s. 97 1 * Do ref 5s 93 U S Rubber 6s. ..103% Distillers 5s 72% D S Steel 2d 55.. 104% Erie prior lien 4s. Butter, Cheese and Kss« Prices for eggs were given another boost yes terday, persistent bidding on the exchange by dealers who were determined to bring out some stocks or make the large storage operators pay dearly for their purchases in the country sending the market up. Extras ami firsts were 2c a dozen higher at 26% c and 26c respectively, and seconds were marked up lc to a quotation of 24c a dozen. The bidding brought out a few small lots and the market was declared firm at the new quotations. The advance checked sales, as retail tradesmen naturally figured that the market was abnormally high for tola time uf the year and were limiting their operations, fearing to be caught long In the event of a break. The butter market remained firm at the old quotations on a continued brisk demand for local use and ship ment to outside points. In the cheese depart ment California fancy flats recovered the %c lost on Tuesday, but the market had a weak tone. Sales on the exchange were as follows: Eggs — 10 cases of extras at 20c auU 20 at 26 K.c a dozen. Cheew — 23 California fancy new flats at 14% c a pound. April 13. — There was a jump of 2c in the prices offered for eggs In the local markets today on receipt of advices of transac tions on the San Francisco dairy produce ex chance this morning. The local dealers today are quoting 24 %c spot cash per dozen for choice and 22% c for seconds. This is the highest price ever known for this season of the year, and comes aa a great sur prise to both producer and packer. The opinion prevails that there Is a big market manipulation in progress by a San Frauclsco combine with the view- of either shutting out some independent packer or else forcing prices up for the delivery of a large quantity of eeg». With the heavy production at this time and the splendid conditions the high price can not be maintained for any length of time. Potatoes.
