May 6.—Explana tion of the action of financial mar kets turned on the principal news item of the day, the alarming- ill ness of King: Edward. The actual volume of sales was not large, but the proportion for London ac count was larger than usual and sufficient to give clear notice of the disposition of the London mar ket to avail itself of New York facilities for turning securities into cash. - - There is no clear reason why the passage of the English, suc cession to the throne should af fect the value of American secur ities or, for that matter, English securities. The precedeht of the death of Queen Victoria showed financial markets unruffled. The present situation differs in some respects, both political and financial. The money position In London is extraordinarily strong, owing to the measures of recup eration recntly taken by the Bank of England. The stock market was not left without support, and an effective midsession rally resulted. It was accompanied by special strength in Brooklyn Transit. That stock and " Chesapeake and Ohio were influenced by rumors of dividend increases. A rally also followed the pub lication of the preliminary esti mates of the week's currency movement. The money market was easier, both on call and on time. Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par value, $2,381,000. United States bonds were un changed on call.
