PAUL, STOCK KEENLY WATCHED NEW YORK, June 9.^ — There was a further falling off in the amount of the dealings in stocks today and some remaining uncertainty, in .the tone of speculation, al though on a narrowing range of fluctuations^ \u25a0 , The relations of the railroads to the control exercised by the gov ernment held Its prominence as 1 a subject of influence. Sentiment was unsettled over the direction of that influence. The probable period required by the interstate commerce, commission _for the con sideration of proposed rate ad vances .was canvassed with some anxiety and the. progress of the railroad bill through, the confer ence^ stage was awaited with in terest, especially the proposed restoration of supervision of the capital issues. The movement of St. Paul was watched with close attention on account of a supposition that the policy of restraint on the market had centered its operations in that stock. The recent heavy selling of the stock has aroused much conjecture over its . source and varying surmises over the identity of the seller made up one of the features of the day's market. The renewed depression of St. Paul at the outset of the trading was of considerable sentimental effect on the whole list, and its rebound had the effect of relieving the heaviness of the general list. The copper industrials were af fected both here and abroad by the increase in surplus stocks of the .metal during May, reported yesterday by the Copper; Produc ers' association, and this-consti tuted another influence in the early depression. These Influences at first over balanced that of the reduction in the Bank of England official dis count rate, which had the effect of reviving the London buying of stocks in this' market. The items of^the bank's weekly statement showed clearly the definite passing of the influence of the tax collec tions and the necessity forced on the central institution of effecting some distribution to the market of these heavy accumulations by purchase of treasury bills. . The Bank of France and the Imperial bank of Germany, at the same time, made strong weekly returns. The upward course of United States steel helped to lift prices during the day. Bonds were irregular. Cherries were in free supply, but the demaml was brisk and prices for both loose and packed stock were maintained without dif ficulty: .In the berry department all chest goods .were easy with the exception of Long worth strawberries and choice raspbeiries. Gooseberries were very scarce and in demand at stiff prices. - Currants stood as before quoted, the demand and supply about balancing. There were further small arrivals of sugar pears and sales were -reported at» 50e for small boxes and baskets and at $1 for large boxes. .Figs from the south sold at $1@1.25 a box.
