The Monti cello is under charter to the immigra tion bureau and was making its 10 o'clock trip to Angel island, when the raft with its four drenched and shiver ing passengers was encountered. The prisoners who- tried to escape were: Thomas L. Henderson, serving a life sentence for murder; Beverly C. Jones, under five years' sentence for desertion; Lawrence Hill, three years for disobedience, and Walter Lindsay, an embezzler. They belonged to a gang of prisoners sent from Alcatraz to the quarry at Angel island and dropped out of line at 5:30 p. m.*, while being marched from their bunkhouse to breakfast and were not missed until roll call at 7 o'clock. The runaways waited until guards and prisoners were in the mes« tent and then constructed their raft and shoved off. The currents carried them around the shore line, out of sight of the quarry, and they were getting «long famously until a cross current - took charge of the raft. By vigorous pad dling they managed to keep the un friendly drift from carrying them back to where the guards could have taken pot shots at them, but that was all. The raft refused to go offshore, and when the Monticello came along the fugitives were tired, wet and willing to go back to captivity. Captain Hatch tent the quixtet into the fireroom to dry their clothes, while he headed the Monticello for the quarry wharf, where the guards welcomed the wandering charges with loaded rifles. , .\u25a0> *-:^ BENT TO POINT RICHMOND— Albert A.
