C 6 I Do jea is 7«' 4 NEW LOW LEVEL MADE IN COFFEE NEW YORK, July 12.— Stocks suffered reaction in today's mar ket after rising in the early deal ings to about the high level re bound which had been in pro gress for several daj-s. The movement was not accom panied by any notable change in the news of conditions, but there was a distinct decrease in demand at the higher levels incident to the reduction of the short inter est and the disinclination of buy ers of a more substantial kind 'to follow the rise in prices, in face of the uncertain views of the conditions indicated by the six months of falling prices of stocks. The copper stocks were the vulnerable spot in the list, Amal-' gamated copper falling to a new low level for the year in conso nance with a further decline of the price of copper in London. This special weakness had sym pathetic effect on the general list, but the establishment of a down ward tendency in the price move ment revived some feeling of dis quiet over the 1 general business situation. The tone of a statement said to have been issued in behalf of the German foreign office regarding diplomatic relations in Central and South America was the decisive influence in shaping , the late.r movement of stock prices. The fall in prices of copper metal to new low levels in London and reports of price concessions also in the New York copper mar ket put a bad face on the situa tion in that industry and on the earning prospects of companies concerned In the mining and sale of the metaL The- weakening effect of the liquidation in the coppers and the hesitation of buying on account of the extent of the rebound made the market sensitive to the re ported utterance of the German foreign office. The report was so circumstan tial in giving official sanction to the statement and the statement itself was, at the same time, so provocative in tone, as to throw some feeling of consternation into the market, and there was some hasty throwing over of stocks. The direct contradiction in the tone of the utterance to the con ciliatory, statement on the subject from the same source earlier in the day served to throw suspicion on it, and the lack of reliable con firmation left the report disci-ed ited and induced the shorts to cover and rally the market. The earlief declines were only partly recovered, leaving last prices be low last night, but with the toxta quite steady. Crop news, money market con ditions, the gold import prospects and other factors which have fig ured in the late market were sup planted by the technical position and the German sensation. Bonds were irregular. Total sales (par value), $1,413,000. U. .S. bonds were unchanged on call. This decline Is supposed to foreshadow the disappointment in mill run. which has not yet been made public. This, how ever, is not official. Copper Range (.hows a loss of I?;, telling at Co'{. The undertone, tlirojphout the entire list is somewhat weaker, due of course to the de cline In the price of the metal. In other de partments the tone is somewhat . stronger. The continued weakness in Lake copper and new levels were the features of the market. There was good buying below 34 and many stop orders reached, the f tock .' going Into stronger hands. It Is understood June returns show under 20 pounds copper or 30 pounds mineral, but an i orher report says it appears rich as ever. It Is more eTldent that curtailment of copper production must be brought about before better ment in the shares .Is seen. . The f'ilowinj; list is furnished by E. F. Hut ton & Co., 490 California.' SANTA CRUZ, July 12.— Merchants and com mission men are offering SOc for eggs, receiving their supply . mostly ' from ■ small dealers. The larger ■ poultrymen either sell- direct- to con sumers : or ship. SANTA ROSA, July 12. — TTie local egg market returned to the figure of Monday again today, after a change of half a cent per dozen over Tuesday. The local dealers are offering 26*4 c per dozen spot cash and 23V^c. The supply Is light,; with a good demand. Some eggs are .being shipped to Oakland and S&n Francisco daily, and a few to outside points. ' Potatoes, Onions and Vegetables ! A good £ portion of yesterday's . arrivals of vegetables from the river districts missed the early trade, owing to the late arrival of the boats, and as a result there was quite a sur plus-unsold at the end of the day. Receivers, however, were ■ able to clean up large lines of carried;over stuff at fair to good values In the morning. ■■ Peas and lima beans were the only scarce articles on the, list, the latter being offered in small lots at So a pound. Asparagus cut but little figure in the market and the de mand, for rhubarb was limited. The onion mar ket .was - firm, with yellow 1 a little higher. The boats and trains were late yesterday, and but for the fact that there was" some advance buying for shipment on ,the northern: steamer much -good fruit would have been uncared for or sold cheap. Apricots had a decidedly weaker tone and $1 was a top price for ; lag boxes • with most dealers. The ■ can ners were offering $12.50@20 a ton. but receiv ers were holding for more. ' Hay and' Feedstuff* Somers & Co. say of hay: "There has been a marked diminution m ha? shipments daring the week ending today, the total showing but 2,360 tons in comparison -with 3,640 tons for last week, and 2,970 for the week preceding. The general scarcity of cara has been mainly responsible for these light shipments, although It is well that hay was not shipped in here more freely, for our mar ket has been very dull and could not have welt absorbed any greater supply. "The feature of the bay market at th» pres ent moment Is Its dullness and the hoped for , trade that generally materializes after tha fourth" of July is not yet In evidence. Tha lack of demand can be attributed to the fact that most consumers who, as a rule, begin to take in their winter's supply at this time of year now seem very indifferent and .inclined .to wait a bit longer, anticipating even lower prices. 1 '•We have frequently referred to the fact that the barley market and the hay market gea orally go hand la hand. As the barley market 1 has recently made a sharp advance, ■it < may be that hay will Improve after a bit also.
