The amounts of the deal ing's were trivial and the range of prices narrow. The banking:' outlook, ,the labor, question and crop news were dis cussed with languid interest and dealings growing out of these con siderations were often reversed in the course of the day's session. An early decline was followed by a recovery leaving fractional gains. Canadian Pacific was rather acutely affected by the system's sympathetic influence of the strike on the Grand Trunk. That occur rence seemed' to dominate senti ment over the labor question to the exclusion of the agreement on a basis of settlement. between the Pennsylvania and its . employes both east and west. Its influence was enhanced by the uneasy feeling existing in England over the dispute over wages on some of its railroad sys tems, while the French railroads are in the throes of a like conten tion. Influences from the side of crop advices were mixed. Movements iri' the cotton market are accepted as passing phases of a speculative campaign rather than accurately .reflective of the state of supply and its promise. " Various factors are combining to build up the strength of the New York banking position, but the effect on sentiment in the stock market is modified by a dis position to look ' askance at the revived movement for the forma tion of currency associations such as are provided for in the law for issuance of emergency currency. The protestations from treasury authorities and from such bankers as favor the movement that the time is fitting owing to absence? of any present emergency do not prevent assumptions that prepara tion is desired ror a passible re-, sort to the emergency issues this fall. The United States- treasury is turning back into, the money mar ket a large proportion of the sum collected for the corporation in come tax. Heavy government dis-. bursements have -established a gain for the New York banks on the operations with the subtreas ury since the July 1 bank state ment of $5,680,000. Currency re ceipts from the interior and .In coming gold shipments are to be reckoned in addition. Bonds were steadw Total sales -ar value V $955,000. United States bonds were un changed on call. The' Lakeview gur.her is 1.600 feet below, the mean ; level ■nf ; tin- 'Santa • Barbara channel and 60 mile* distant. -Despite this ■ distance, , en gineers have -rdixcovered ■ that tl»e flow of ■ the pusher Tin directly, affected .by the tides. The torrent of oil increases -.with 'high- tide and-de creases : with low Ukle. but just what the ratio of Increase and decrease is has not- been deter mined, although: the difference Is manifest. » . According, to geologists, the wash of the sea has had much to <5o with the deposit of petro-' lcum in < the: so, called oil sands, it being found In . zones ; as if cast up by the tides. .As proof of ; this contention shellfish; . starfish, mammoth oyster shells and sharks' teeth have been found iv the oil sand* of many fields in .this state. The Lakeview : gusher .was' tapped on March 10 last, since which time it has flowed from 40,000 to 00,000 i barrels a day. _ The well came In ut'a depth of 2.200 feet, but has long "since developed into an immense, oil crater, theextent of which none can tell. Butter Cheese and Eggs There was no regular session of the egg and dairy produce trade yesterday, th* exchange ad journing out of respect to the memory of H. A. Bingham, deceased, who up to the time of his death was a prominent member of the Los An geles produce exchange. Business in the street was based on Monday's quotations. The market for. butter, remained firm, though there were some large receivers who were still . complaining that ; prices were too : high. : Strictly fine eggs were firm, with dealers expecting prices for the upper grades to move upward. There was not much doing In the under grades, which - formed a large percentage of -the receipts. Cheese was quiet and featureless. • . ■Receipts were 55,700 pounds of butter, 6,500 pounds of cheese and 1.30S cases of eg^s. . .The following are the official quotations estab lished on the floor of the dairy exchange. Hay and Feedstuff* The hay situation is thus stated by Somers & Co.: '•Receipts of hay for the week Just past were comparatively heavy, 3.630 tons arriving, whereas during the week previous but 2.5tt0 tons were re ceived. The increased shipments have had a material effect on not only the. local market, but also on country buying. The local situation con tinues unsatisfactory, it being extremely difficult to 'move hay at all, with, of course., the excep tion of the choicer qualities, which usually take care of themselves. There., is some movement on the part of consumers to lay la a supply of . bay for fall and winter use, but this demand- Is- teey light, compared to what it was a few years asro. "There has been purchased in the country but very little hay for storage, with the exception of the Llvermore section. In which district operators have paid very bigb prices, comparatively speak ing,"for. many round lots of hay. but this move ment now- has ceased to a great extent. There Is a growing desire on the part of the farmeM throughout the country to sell tbeir bay. and, al though It is not late in the season at all. yet the prudent farmer is beginning to think of get ting his hay under cover, for already in some districts rain has been threatening." .
