A "C. :?.— The .«tock market today disclosed its narrow limitations under condi r tions as ■ they p.vist. The sliarp l-Pbound of the day before seemed to exhaust the demand from the. phorts and there was none forth coming of a more positive nature. While there was-, no renewal of the urgent selling' which has around the suspicion pf. forced liquidation from time' to time, there was a pressure of stocks for Rale to realize profits on the rebound of yesterday. Sales were in moderate volume, but the demand had become so feeble and languid that no . ab-' porptive medium was provided and prices gave -way. Before the close of the day the requirements of the shorts asserted themselves again and caused a recovery of most of the day's declines... The news offered, no striking changes in conditions bearing on values. The growing crops hold a largo share of attention. Early reports of more high temperatures in Texas were succeeded by as sertions that cloudy and cool weather had developed there. The money market offered nothing to supply the depressive influence on stocks. Movement of cash into New York bank re serves continues on a large scale. The gain for the week of $4,183, 000 on subtreasury operations is helped by large deferred pay r ments from the assay office for gold arriving from London. ;Ad "ditional shipments are arriving and yesterday's engagement of over $3,000,000 in London remains to g\ Into account. An existing actual surplun reserve of upward of $50,000,000, computed from last Saturday's actual surplus of over $47,000,000, seems warrantable as sumption from these figures. ■'. The withdrawals of gold had the effect of hardening the pri vate discount rate in London, but the excess ■value of loans on time in New York over London re mains so wide that continued movement of, gold is indicated. A good impression was made by the reported assertions of Chi cago bankers that the balances of country banks in the western reserve centers are being largely replenished as a result of the lib eral jnovemeht of wheat to mar ket. Study in detail of the banks' returns to the comptroller affords reassuraAce as to the reserve po sition of the country banks, which are responsible for the loan ex pansion of three months preced ing June 30. Rumors of price cutting of steel products by independents were ; accompanied by a supposition ■ that the United States steel cor poration ivould meet the cuts. The selling of United States steel was a decisive sympathetic . influence on the general list. The rally in that stock afforded cor responding relief. The dealings in it, Union Pacific and Reading accounted for over half the day's business. • Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par value, $1,444,000. United States bonds were un changed on call.
