SANTA ROSA, Aug. 24.— District At
torney Lea has concluded to abandon
entirely the coroner's inquest begun at
Cazadero early in the month over the
remains of Enoch and Eura Kendall
and their son, Thomas Kendall, who
were found murdered on the F. 11.
Starbutk ranch, and begin jail over
again at the inquest to be held here
Friday.
As a result of this decision Sheriff
J. K. .Smith has served subpoenaes on
Mrs. Margaret Starbuck and F. H. Star
buck of Oakland. Mrs. Janette Thomp
son of San Francisco, Justice of the
P^ace F. D. Trosper, Deputy Sheriff
Ernest Trosper. Wm. Churchman and
Arthur Collins of C,azadero, Dr. J. W.
Jesse and Dr. S. S. Bogle of Santa Rosa.
Just sufficient evidence wilW be in
troduced to satisfy the requirements
of the law to warrant a charge of mur
d^r against Henry Yamaguchi wanted
for the crime. A large amount of evi
<l<yiee held by the officers will not be
presented in order to avoid making
public the case of the prosecution be
fore the suspect is arrested.

Citizen Effects the Capture of
Suspicious Character

PETALUMA, Aug. 24. — There is in the
city Jail an upwllling guest "who is
probably the ruffian who has of late
been terrorizing housewives by. : de
mands for money and even lodging.
He made a mistake when he visited
the residence of Harry Glbbs, who
grappled with him until assistance ar
rived and the fellow was securely tied.
The intruder was placed in a hose cart
and 'conveyed to the jail by an escort
of a score or more irate citizens.
The prisoner gave his name as Fred
Ganez and said he was a recent ar
rival from New York. The police s e.x
pect to connect him with various bur
glaries.

PICKPOCKETS AND
BUNKOMEN JAILED
Nineteen Known Criminals Are
Imprisoned on Charges
For several .days Detectives Tom
Murphy and Arthur . McQuaide have
been specially detailed by acting Cap
tain Shea of the southern district to
round up bunko men and pickpockets
who make Market street their field of
operations.- As a result 19 well known
members of these two criminal profes
sions have been arrested and charged
with vagrancy. Their cases are pend
ing in the police courts, and Chief
Martin has asked the police judges to
fiend each of them, if possible, to the
county jail for six months.
The approaching festival of the Na
tive Sons will bring criminals to the
city, and men will be specially de
tailed to. look put for .and arrest
them so that visitors will, not be

the city is in a worse plight than here

as much as possible, and I think we

CHINESE COUNTERFEITS
U. S. TEN DOLLAR COINS
HONOLULU, -Aug. 24.— Lee -Young,' 'a
Chinese,, was arrested today in a re
mote of - the island of. Maul on
a charge of counterfeiting. Lee was
found in possession of a complete
counterfeiting plant, with which he
had been turning out excellent counter
feits of ten dollar coins,, composed
largely of gold. Only a few of the
coins have been put Into circulation.

fantry Start Today on a
Tramp to A tascadero
Early this morning 10 companies of
the Thirtieth infantry, divided into
three battalions, will leave the Pre
sidjo for Atascadero for ,thg military
maneuvers under the command of
Colonel Charles Chubb. The first-en
campment will be made tonight near
Colma, the second tomorrow night near
Burlingame, the_ next night Redwood
City, and so on until the camp is
reached on September 14, a total dis
tance of 214 miles with an average
daily march of 10 miles.
Captain Arthur Cranston of the Pre
sidio of Monterey arrived in the city
yesterday and reported at the United
States supply depot as assistant to
Quartermaster Young to relieve Major
Scott. 1
The annual report of. Major General
Thomas H. Earry, as commander of the
department of California, was officially
issued yesterday. r
Among the officers arriving yesterday
were Captain G. B. Sharon of the
Fourth infantry at Fort Logan H. Root,
Second Lieutenant R. H. Fletcher Jr.
of the Eighth infantry at the Presidio
of Monterey and Captain Arthur Crans
ton.
