Sept. l.^The amount of business done in the stock market today was swelled considerably over yesterday's total. The first hour's dealings, in fact, crossed the day's total for yesterday. This increase in activity, however, by no means brought the dealing into a state of animation. The overwhelming preponderance of the transactions in Reading, Union Pacific and United States Steel showed the professional character of the market and how little changed it was in that respect. The entire stagnation of de mand for securities in itself serves as encouragement to at tack by the bears in the specula tion. A movement of prices in either direction was welcomed by the board room traders as a relief from the unprofitable stag nation and they joined freely in the day's movement in the three most active stocks. Colonel Roosevelt's address in Kansas yesterday in its militant attitude against the "special in terests" was a subject of pro fessej apprehension, on the part of sellers of stocks. Restriction of projects of im provement and cutting down out lay as far as possible were ad mittedly on. the program for fu ture months. A general policy of retrenchment by railroads points to reduced demand for such a variety of commodities that the list of industrial securities was unfavorably affected. United States Steel was con spicuous In this respect. Amalgamated Copper was a companion in weakness. Exports of copper during August reported at 27,976 tons, were the largest in any month since April of 1909, but the price of the metal receded in London and the copper securi ties were sold with the rest of the list. The expected advance in the Bank of England discount rate did not occur but the private dis count rate in London held firm, Inroads in New York bank cash are being made at a heavy rate, indications pointing to an in crease of $10,000,000 or upward in that item for the week. Bonds were easy, total sales, par value, $1,476,000. United States bonds were un changed on call. NEW YORK, Sept. 1. — E. F. Hutton & Co.'s wire says: There seems to be little explanation of today's movement in stocks, which was downward, other than the selling of some -long commitments by one or two large speculators, ttlio returned from Europe with in a week. These interests bought storks on their arrival here and endeavored to put the market up, but met. stock' from insiders, hence these operators threw their holdings over yesterday and today. Insiders are not looking f6r and do not. want outside interference, which seems apparent. New York Central and Pennsylvania earn ings for July showed the recent increase of the wage scale in these properties by producing a net loss for the month of over 51.000.000 each. A large loss in cash by the banks for the week is another bearish item. Hence, it was not surprising at bearish operations today. Sept. 1. — E. F. Hutton's Vire says: "Market was absolutely dead. Nearly every transaction was in odd lots, except a few in Lake, whfch was the feature. . selling off two points on mostly odd lots.' The market is in :t waiting position and requires a leader. Oper ators-do not look for any activity until New lork snows an upward trend." The Coiomercial Times says: "The recent strike of ore on the 900 foot level of the prop erty cf the Arizona Commercial copper com pnny In Arizona . assures that company a large producing mine, which will be able to produce copper at about 9c a pound. Keinn Vau Ec, includes not only a sys tem of p'pu lines, but a refinery at either Gnviota or Oilport and a fleet of tank steamers to carry the oil up and down the coast. About $2,000,0fi0 i* to be spent at once. The Va"ey oil company, which is operating on ths very edge of the city limits of Ooalinga. "truck a uusher which flowed over the top of the derrick, according to a report received in Fresno. A driller ou the well ran the baler ltto the hole, and when it was pulled out the well started to flow. The hole is not drilled into the pand. At present, although the agency is selling much more oil than it did last month, it Is still unable to keep pace with the supply, which is much in excess of the demand and sale. -The oil controlled by the agency, now in storage. Is increasing at the rate of between 35.000 and 40,000 barrels per day, and even then a large number of companies have closed down their wells because of the heavy produc tion in the fields. I.— ln the monthly settle ment today more than 2.250.000 bushels of wheat were delivered to commission traders, many <>f whom proceeded to resell in the pit. \u25a0 Such a heavy load forced the September option to the largest discount at any time this season. lOVie below May, and left the market as a whole at a net decline of ii@*«c. Corn closed hie lower to %c higher, oats &<§:l%c up and hog products down 5@17%c. September wheat weakened whenever elevator bupport was withdrawn, which happened fre quently, although in general the warehousemen bought September and sold other months. There was no lack of news on the bear side. North western wheat stocks Increased fully 900.000 bushels, compared with a very small gain a year ago. The Bulgarian crop was reported 20.000.0(x) bushels larger than 12 months previous and there were dispatches asserting that Russia and Rou manla were underselling America. On the other hand it was asserted that export sales had been made at Duluth and there was a late show of strength at Liverpool attributed to sales of Australian cargoes to the continent.- The close here was steady with December V*^%c oft at $1.03%@1.03% after fluctuations during the day reaching from $1.03% to $1.04. The corn trade was still a bit nervous as to possibility of frost damage. December ranged from 57% cto 57% c and closed a shade to l *<" down at'57%@57? B e. Cash corn was firm; No. 2 yellow closing at 59»4@39%c. Oats were active and higher. Hutton & Co.'s wire says: The market has been a rather ragged and mostly a heavy affair today, diffec. euces continuing to widen, the September dis count, the largest now of any time on the crop, being 10 1-4 c below May. Deliveries were heavy at 2.350.000 bushels, and went to scattered com mission concerns. The Jattcr have resold more or less since, as September has weakened when ever the elevator support was withdrawn. Ele vators have bought September and resold for other months, as heretofore. Northwest wheat stocks have Increased over 900.0<X> bushels thus far this week, against a very small gain a year ago. Southwest arrivals are a little over last year and total primary arrivals 1.036,000 bushels, against 825,000 bushels. The Bulgarian crop is officially reported 20.000,000 bushels larger than a year ago, Russia and Roumanta are reported by Antwerp cables as underselling America and the drought in Argentina appears to have been broken by good rains in Rosario, Buenos Aires and Cordova provinces. Argentine shipments for the week were estimated at 1.120,000 bushels, against 258.000 bushels a year ago. India ship ments were ri92,000 bushels, against 152.000 bushels a year ago, and expects to ship 632.000 bushels next week. Export bids are few rfnd far below possible export limits. Nevertheless there are claims of export sales of 72.000 bushels of Manitoba wheat by Duluth exporters. Cash demand for wheat here Is slim and confined to elevators exclusively. Fall plowing is far ad- vanced in the winter wheat country, threshing also is far advanced and fall plowing is begun in the Canadian northwest. Corn — The market has been quite Irregular, but changes have been wltfiln very narrow limits. Trade in September is quite limited and ,that month Is covering a wider range. Trade is -still a little nervous over the possibility of frost damage later, but buyers. were disappointed be cause of failure of frost to show overnight. Fair rains covering most of the corn belt overnight are predicted for tonight or tomorrow. This will help fill the corn, but Is a menace In case frosts show, up early, as the crop is late. Local cash sales of 00,000 bushels are reported. •" Oats — The market has been a little excited to day by far lighter deliveries than expected and evidences of heavy purchases by eastern dealers, who are holding- in cheap storage and hedge the grain here mainly for December and May. Erro neous reports that there were sales for export grew out of the fact that eastern exporters were among the concerns who bought the cash oats. Deliveries were 955.000 bushels out of a stock of "about 4.000.000- bushels, exclusive of special bin holdings. Sales done here today were 620.000 bushels, mostly Buffalo, and a few to Philadelphia. .. \u25a0 Cash Grain and Prorl.vions CHICAGO.
