BERKELEY, Sept. 16.— The buiUing
of homes in Thousand Oaks, Berkeley,
has begun, although the property has
been on the. market only a short time.
R. C. Newell's home, for which William
Knowles is the architect,* is well under
way. It is in the English style of
architecture and will cost between
$8,000 and $9,000. Mark Pw Daniels is
also building ; In. Thousand Oaks. His
Swiss chalet Is being erected on a site
where the large rocks form a grotto
and suggest the outlines 'for the gar
den. Between .this and Newell's home
TV. C. Murdock, cashier of the Western
national bank, will build a plaster
house costing $8,500.
Large forces of men are bringing the
street work into good shape. The
oiled macadam pavement on the Ala
meda will be completed in another
week. When this Is finished It means
that there will be a broad, well paved
boulevard from Berkeley to the heart
of Thousand Oaks. . '.-'; -
It nas been decided by the Kewall-
Hendricks company to sell Arlington
heights at the same time as Thousand
Oaks. Arlington heights is an exclu
sive tract Just east of Thousand Oaks
and south of the 20 acre site upon
which J. H. Spring will soon build his
$100,000 home. ; Only villa homesites
ranging from a fourth acre to an acre
will be sold in this tract, and the
building restriction will be $10,000.
Xewell feels confident that there is a
sufficient demand for large homesites
upon which to build expensive resi
dences to make it an easy matter to
dispose of the 50 homesites which con
stitute Arlington heights.- The Crocker
tract and Claremont court are the only
other subdivisions on the Berkeley side
of the bay which have a $10,000 re
striction. As Arlington- heights will be
within five minutes' jyalk of two rail
road Btatlons, the Hopkins street Key
Route and the electrlqlzed Southern Pa
cific on the Alameda, It offers excellent
advantages to San Francisco capital

Alameda Builders Busy
ALAMEDA, Sept. 16. — Building
shows a tendency to pick up and within
the last two weeks a number of con
tracts for dwellings considerably above
the average in cost and construction
have been let. The south side Is receiv
ing much attention from home seekers.
Unimproved lots in that part of the city
are* rapidly getting 4 scarcer and choice
locations are held at high prices.
Joseph H. Durnay has with his family
moved Into a new residence in Dayton
avenue. .Dr.- W. O. Smith is preparing
to have a home built near the south end
of Grant street. 'j
The two story business block erected
by the Alameda savings bank in Park
street north of the present building of
the bank Is receiving the finishing
