They will then be able to go to and from their homes and Market street without Incurring the dangers and de lays of crossing ' a maze of Southern Pacific tracks. Moreover, a large vol ume of trucking traffic will be wble to pass freely between the warehouse and dock section to the northward and the Potrero manufacturing- district on the SOUth. • . ': Besides these advantages pedestrians will be ablo'to walk safely at all times over the perilous area of tracks where switch engines are always shunting cars back and forth' across Kentucky and Sixteenth streets. Moreover, the ever present danger of fire and' the possibility of the streets being blocked with freightcars so that th'i fire department apparatus may be held up will be entirely avoided. For 15 months the work of construct ing these connecting viaducts has been in progress. All the structural work is now done except an approach to the Kentucky street viaduct at the south ern end. This part of the work has been hindered by the fact that the W. W. Montague pipe works has a lease on the land on the easterly side of Ken tucky street where . the southern ap proach to the viaduct is to be located. This lease is said to expire October 1, and work will then be pushed, on the concrete approach. All the steel'viaduct work is finished In Kentucky street, and the intersect ing viaduct in Sixteenth. The - ap proaches are finished In Sixteenth and Sixth where these two streets come to gether, making a cross town elevated street leading, to Kentucky street. A descent from Sixteenth street leads down to Eldorado street. / The Kentucky street viaduct begins a few rods south of Alameda and ex tends a distance of about 1,200 feet southward to a point just north of Mariposa. The Sixteenth street viaduot, which comes Into it at right angles, is of about equal length, making, includ ing the approaches, something more than half a mile of elevated street. The roadway of the x'iaducts will be 24 feet wide, with a sidewalk of 10 feet throughout the entire length. The work, when completed, will" cost $650, 000. It has been done entirely by the Southern Pacific under the direction of the city engineering department." PREFER TO LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO Success p! That . people .will bujy homes and come to' San Francisco to. live if they can get attractive houses in a highly improved neighborhood is -shown by the success of the Urban \u25a0 realty im provement • company. It began busi ness last January. At the end of six months it had a subscribed capital of something over 1400,000., It determined to increase \u25a0 Its scription to capital stock to JSOO.OOO and found it necessary to increase its board of directors from 7 to 11. Two of the four new members to -be. elected have been decided upon, namely, Rolla V. Watt and Robert D.
