14 THE bridge season has opened. Clubs are meeting several afternoons a week, some for bridge and some for skat, and all'for stakes. These are higher than they were last j-ear. The mild quarter of a cent prairies of the past are altogether too stupid, with only two or three dollars lost or won. A cent a point is usually played for, and not infrequently 2or 3 cents a point is the rule. By next winter the New York limit may be reached. There is one club that plays for 2 cents a point. Its members— there are eight of them — are some of the cleverest players in the Francisca club, where, by the way, Miss Laura McKinstry is considered the cleverest of all, and where, too, it will be understood, stakes are not allowed. The club of eip:ht meets twice a month at the several homes of the members, ainon^r whom is a certain prominent matron, the daughter of a charming lady of the old school, to whom the thought of women playing cards for money is intolerably shocking. In her day gentlemen gambled, of course. They played for very high stakes — as high sometimes as the value of their homes. "There was Judge McAllister, who lost his residence near South park in a game of poker to Judge Lyon, the grandfather of "Harry" Floyd, who married Milos Gopcevich, the Servian streetcar driver, and died a few years ago — and so on. But ladies never dreamed of putting a price... on point? at casino. They enjoyed the game for itself, find there is no reason, she believes, why bridge may not be just as absorbing as casino without •stakes. At any "rate, she can not countenance playing cards for money in her home. So it happens that when the eight enthusiasts meet there.no money changes hands and checks arc not written. In deference to her mother's prejudice, the hostess provides prizes for winners, and the club makes the concession of setting aside its 2 cent rule on these occasions. It I . is the only house in it« set, so to speak, where prizes still prevail. • • -. •?: ': ■ ■!•..- • • * * ■ -;.*'= Miss Dorothy Page has bidden the group of deb utantes and several of their elder sisters for an informal dancing party to be given this evening at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs.' Arthur PageV in Belvedere. FORMER SOLDIER WANTS WIFE BACK Fred Delker Blames Relatives and Lawyers for Suit for Divorce Losing control of himself -while on the witness stand Fred Delker, a for mer soldier and defendant in a divorce suit, angrily shouted that if the rela tives and lawyers would cease their interference his wife would return to him. "I'll pay that man 'his counsel fee," "he declared, referring to Attorney J. E. Colston. "All I want is that he'll let ray wife alone." Delker wrote to Judge Mogan re cently, saying that his wife, who had sued him for divorce, had no valid ground for so doing and that lack of money prevented him obtaining coun sel. He asked the court to Investigate th« situation. Delker testified that after his dis charge from the army he had some difficulty in g-ettingr a fresh start* in civil life, but that his wife was fully aware of his financial condition .when she married him. "She is being led by, Attorney J. E. Colston and her father," said Delker. "I am willing to pay Colston his fee If he will let her alone." "Where is Mrs. Delker?" asked Judge Mogan. "I did not v thjnk it was necessary for her to appear." said Col6ton. "Have her In court next Friday," said Mogan. Judge Troutt granted a divorce to Helen Montgomery from S. E. Mont gomery on the ground of desertion and Judge Cabaniss granted one to Ed ward G. Sequin from Lulu Sequin for desertion. Suit for divorce was commenced by Richard E. MERCHANTS OBJECT TO SLOT MACHINE Threaten to Discharge All Em ployes Caught Playing Gaming Devices * In a letter sent to the board of super visors yesterday the Merchants* asso ciation unequivocally protested against the reintroduction of slot machines into the' city, declaring that they were not only a menace to" morals, but to busi ness. The letter reads: Understanding that certain peti tions have been made to your honorable board asking that the use of nickel in the slot machines be again permitted in San Fran cisco, we desire to file our em phatic protest against such per mission being granted." in case such action Is being c6nsidered. .The playing of slot machines is simply gambling and makes gam blers out of our employes.! This is not simply a question of morals; it is also a question of business. As an evidence of this, members of this association have stated to us that if the use of slot machines is permitted, it is their intention to notify employes that: any one found playing the machines will be discharged. , ■ . The city has succeeded in rid ding itself of slot machines and it would be a step backward to per mit their use again. We therefore urge your honorable body to deny this petition. ; The letter is. signed by President M. H. Robbins and Secretary L. M. King.
