'Sept. 23— Stock tra.din{? resolved itself again today into a series of tests of the tone; of the market by the professional, element. That is what is hap pening from day to day. Profound indifference is maintained by the general public and the capital in < terests more immediately con i cerned with the affairs of corpora t tions. Only 'fractional price s changes again proved to be the ' outcome at the end of the day. I The first movement of the mar- Jp kot toward a lower level was pre ]• cipitate, and was the response to i| the remarks by Commissioner !i L«ne yesterday at the interstate III I commerce commission hearing into 1; rp.ilroad rates at Chicago. His |i assertion that "we must work out i 1i 1 this problem on other lines than '', by the proposed method of raising I the tariffs."' was seized on as defl i| nitely outlining the decision of the , commission on the petitions now / before it for specific advances in I 1 rates. ', The quick check to the down !' ward movement showed that there 1 [ was no widespread agreement 1 with this view. The particular weakness in Amalgamated copper was due to the reports that Calumet and Hecla had lowered its asking price for lake copper by to 12 % c. The nervous tone of. the speculation over the copper situation perme ates the whole speculative fabric, and any siprns of a break in the copper market are feared for the widespread consequences which* might ensue. Many old rumors were revived in connection with the speculative outburst in Reading, including capital, readjustment, distribution and "concealed assets" and so on. Bonds were steady. Total sales (par value), $3,286,000. United States bonds were un changed in the bid price on call. NEW YORK. Sept. 23.— E. F. 'Hutton & Co.'s wire says: "To day's security market continued to be subject to much profession-, alism. with a few specialty move ments during: the session. Read ing was the feature, making a fair g-ain in the day's operations, and we might say that much of the buying 1 was good. Rumor has it of a large coming distribution of cash on this stock. "The New York traction shares scored the greatest gain for the day. and the buying here was the result of the entrance of City bank and J. P. Morgan interests in the future of these properties. "There was virtually nothing new in the Wall street situation of material interest Jn changing the course of sentiment, which is decldedlv mixed as to the future trend of prices." Sept. 23.— 1 VF. Hutton'» wire says: The msrket opened fractionally lower, but not in comparison with the New York list. Shoe ' common wa« again today's feature, selling alK»ve 60% on continued good buying. Copper shares are still awaiting a leader, and we would not be surprised to 6ee them start any moment now. We look for these issues to be led by Lake Superior shares. Activity in the coppers still is much restricted, however, and the price changes are hardly worthy of mention, except Tamarack, which is down two points. x The August production of the Utah copper comtvam- was 7,440,035 pounds, a reduction of 1.200.000 from the average monthly output of the three preceding months, or a curtailment of 14 per cent. Sept. 23.— Bradstreet's tomor row will say: Trade and industrial reports are still irregular and general characterization is difficult. Fair activity in some lines and at some centers Is indicated, but repression and conservatism are widely in evidence and reflected in small but frequent rather than large or confidential buying. One really favorable underlying feature, per haps not thoroughly appreciated at present,, is the apparpnt absence, of large stocks of goods in primary or secondary • hands, born apparently of uncertainty as to future prices and . the growth of the belief that far distant buyings is neither advisable nor necessary. , Reports from leading •"industries are of re pression In operation. Basic pig iron Is weaker and there are reports of willingness to sell further ahead. Some, finished lines show a slightly larger volume of business booked, but railway buying is still conspicuous by its com parative absence. In -the : eastern leather trade some sole leather tanners are operating much below capacity and eastern shoe manufacturers report conservatism marked in buying. At the west some centers report shoe, fac tories running to capacity. In textile lines cur tailment is still In evidence. Staple lines meet with fairly steady demand. Jobbers and manu facturers' stocks are reported lighter than usual. Some makes of ginghams and cottons for next spring, for which prices have been announced, ba** sold quite freely. In the woolen goods trade political agitation is claimed to be holding back future demand. .
