Sept. 27.— The congrestion of the: speculative op erations in Reading and the sus picion of artificiality in the move ment of. that etock had a- re pressive, rather than * a stimulat ing effect on the general specu lative movement todaj'. The news regarding Reading developments was as vague- and as various as yesterday, includ-" ing a revival of practically all rumors which have done duty in connection with market move ments in that stock for several years. United States steel surrendered its Orsual primacy of the market to Reading, with a volume' less than one-half that of the latter stock, with Union Pacific a poor third in the amount of the deal ings. Reading's proportion to the .whole market reached 37 per cent. "*•; Prices at the end of the day "were at the lowest' and showed trivial net losses. The' banking community stud ; iedi with great interest the' com-' pilation of national bank reports to the controller as of Septem ; ber 1, although the subject was \u25a0 not much discussed in the stock 1 market. And the showing was ! regarded as demonstrating the 1 wisdom of the drag which was ' applied to the extension of credits ! after the appearance of the spring 'abstract of bank reports. The influence of the October settlements continued to harden interest rates in ! the immediate money market. Foreign exchange rates Advanced in response to the higher discount rate in'- London. The subtreasury has taken 14.291.000 from the Mew York banks thus far this week. Money on call rose to 2U per cent. Bonds were - irregular. Total sales (par value). $2,731,000. . United States bonds were un changed on call. . NEW YORK, Sept. 27.— E. F. Hutton & Co.'s wire, says: "The broadening tendency in the se curity market, in which leading stocks were well' bought, was the feature in the market today, es pecially the, earlier part of the session. Late dealings, however, were at fair recessions, and some inside realizing undoubtedly oc curred as the result of further heavy losses by banks here to the treasury, also the likelihood -of advance in the Bank of ' England 'rate next Thursday. While these -matters were largely technical, they were of sufficient influence 'to stop aggressive buying. There was very little in the way of news in the street today, but sen timent was showing quite some change for the better as to the future of securities. \ Col So ri-est 4%s STWUnion Paoine 45.. 101*4 Del & Hud cv 4s. 97% Do cv 4s • 102% Den & Rio G 4s. 9514!
