NEW YORK. Oct. 3.— The stock
market gave further evidence to
day of passing 1 , out' of the hands,
of the narrow element of board
room traders which hafe engrossed
the dealings for many weeks.
There were signs of a re-entry. of
operators of larger resources and
of a broader scope In method.
;The reappearance on the tape
of blocks of 1.000 to 7,500 shares
of United States steel was regard
ed as suggestive in this direction.
The appearance of growing
breadth which was a feature of
last week's market was altered
as the day progressed and 'the
concentration in United States
steel, Reading and Union Pacific
became more pronounced. Prices
were not well held in the latter
part of the day and the closing
was rather weak.
The first quotation for call loans,
wae at 2% per cent and the fixing
of the renewal rate at that figure
quieted any apprehension caused
by the $5,000,000 figure to which
the actual surplus had sunk In the
Saturday bank statement.
The discount rate hardened In
London today, but the Bank of
England 6ecured the available
gold in the London market with
out competition. The weekly
statement of the Imperial Bank of
Germany mad© e> striking showing
of th« sever© strain of the Octo
ber- settlement at that center, as
well as Its quick passing, with
an Increase in loans and discounts
of $140,275,000 and an expansion
of note issues of $155,592,000. the
cash holdings of the Reichsbank
were drawn at the same time over
540,000.000 as the result of the
week's operations. Yet the pri
vate discount rate in Berlin re
ceded % to 4 per cent today.
Bonds were firm. Total sales
(par value). $1,980,000. /
United States bonds were un
changed on call.
NETV YORK, Oct. 3. — E. F. Hut
ton & Co.'s wire says: "Satur
day's poor bank statement being
purelj' technical as to the present
monetary situation, that was not
a factor in today's security mar
ket, but the more important ele
ments in the situation, such as the
raising of railway rates, were
matters chiefly considered by the
bankers here. Good stocks were
well bought during most of the
session, though some little spec
ulative profit taking occurred in
the late dealings.
We believe that stocks will
work materially higher this fall.

BOSTON. Oct. 3.— E. F. Hutton &. Ca's wire
says: The market opened steady, gaining
strength and activity as the day advanced,
especially pronounced in th» k>w priced issues,
notably Arcadian. Trinity. Franklin and Winona.
We look for a continuance of the upswings in
this market. The copper metal situation Is
steadily improving and prices were advanced by
American emelters company %c a pound Satur
day. They are sold 60 days ahead. The other
bljr companies have practically withdrawn from
the market.
The copper shares are showing greater ac
tivity, with the tone verr strong throughout
the entire list. Trading has been well dis
tributed and with more outside interest than
has appeared for some time past. Copper Range
has been the leader In the advance and at 67
shows a gain of 2 points. Lake has been quite
active and sold at 36%. Miami Ray consoli
dated and Nevada consolidated are all strong.

The oil stocks continued quiet yesterday and
prices showed no changes worthy of • note. ,-.-
Republic has successfully shut off the water
in its No. 1 well, which has 600 f«*t of oil
standing in It, which indicates a good well

A report from Los : Angeles says '. that 400
acres of the Midway Union's -500 acres In San
Emldlo have been sold to E. P.* Gable and
Pittsbure associates for $13,000. -.
The Lacey oil company, operating In the
Devils Den country, is' reported to have a small
showing of ] very light oil, the test showing
about S3 gravity. The Pluto oil company re
sumed work about 10 days ago and the -Devils
Den consolidated has. bonded its, holdings, to
Mr. -' Yaraw, . formerly of the. Standard oil com- ;
pany. ... ... . . •• .
Although \ the Imperial and. Thirty-three oil
properties In the Kern river oil fields were sold
several months ago to an English syndicate at a
big figure, the Imperial oil company still has
some large holdings In j the northern - fields. Ac
cording to . the latest nup. the Imperial owns
the whole of section 1-29-28. . ' -r. '
Four, hundred barrels ' of 34 B. oil are being
delivered daily by the White Star in the Little
Sespe. for which the company is receiving $1.25 a
barrel. Well No. 6, . recently brought lin. at
1,850 feet, is producing 100 barrels daily: in
the pump.- Well No. 5 is producing 250 barrels

Bakersfield advices say that the Standard Is
to lay a six inch pipe line from the Consolidated
Midway gusher on- fractional section S^. the
four. Inch line being- too> small to handle yie
flow. An offer is said to have been made to
the Consolidated to buy 1,000.000 barrels at 30c
over and above - the Standard contract, to be
delivered at a rate of 10,000 barrels dally.

Butter, Cheese and Ercs
Butter opened the . week with the market
steady and in. good shape generally, there being
a good demand for top quality table goods and
for the lower grades also. Several . dealers .were
short on \u25a0 extras and the shortage caused some
active buying on. the exchange, which sent prices
for fresh stock up. The advance was lc in ex
tras and firsts and %cln seconds, the *.ew quo
tations . ranging from 29c to 34 Vie a pouod.
Receipts- of eggs were light, but ample for all
need?. Sales of extras in the street were rather
slow, with retail tradesmen taking just about
enough . to keep their customers, supplied. These
conditions' were reflected on the exchange, where
trading sent the price of extras down \c to a
quotation of 45c a dozen. The lower grades
stood- as -before quoted. The only change in
cheese was \u25a0 a decline •of lc In fancy Xoung
Americas, which were quoted at 16c a pound.
Sales on the exchange were as follows:
