10 LINER HAS QUICK TRIP FROM SOUTH City of Sydney, From the Isth mus, Comes From Mazatlan in Five Days tJT for two days of s-trongr head winds encountered after passing the Santa Barbara channel, the Pacific Mail liner City of Syd ney would have made a new record between Mazatlan and the Golden grate. As it was the liner made the run from tlie Mexican port fn 5 days and 1 hour, which Is the best trip that any of the Harriman roasters has made in many months. All the Panama rMps have been maklngr better time lately, and oredit for the improvement *s given to Marine Superintendent Wil liam Chishoim, who is Paid to be on speaking 1 term? with every enpine on e\*ery ship of the Harriman fleet. At the. time Ohisholm took charge only one ship, the Newport, made the run from Mazatlan in six days with any deprree of regularity. The other ships made the run in T, 8 and 9 days, sometimes 3 0 days. Even the Aeapulco does bet ter than that now, and the San Juan, which came up from the i^Thumus ahead of the Sydney, made the run from MazatJan in less than 6 days. Chisholm'S heart to heart talks with the Mack squads on the different ships are bearing fruit, and all the engines are on their best behavior. The City of Sydney. Captain William Fisher, brought from the Isthmus and way ports 2i passengers and 779 tons of cargo. The coast cargo included 2.163 sacks of coffee. 49 hardwood logs and 354 cases of limes. The New York freight included iron and steel, crock ery, paper and hardware. Except for the two days of head winds the Syd ney was favored with fine weather all the way from the isthmus, and made the run in -0 days, getting here a day ahead of time. The secretary was directed to notify the board of public works that the har bor commission did not think it advis able to fill in Berry street between Second and Third. but that the state would stand half the expense of building a temporary roadway. A«la Stripped of Its Yard* The Pacific Mail liner Asia has been stripped of its ya.rds and hereafter will be registered as a schooner rigged steamer. It was the success of the ex periment in the case of the China that led to the stripping of the Asia. The Asia was rigged as a four masted bark and the yards and gear connected therewith while adding to the ship's beauty offered a resistance to the air to overcome which meant additional coal consumption. Without its top hamper the Asia will lose much of its crankiness, and will also burn less coal on the run between here and Hong kong. Vancouver Tug a Total I.o.«»s The Vancouver tug Albion, which went ashore at Black Point, Scow bay. near Vancouver, last Friday, is a total loss. It struck Hie rocks at night, and the heavy sea soon damaged it so seriously that the crew was compelled to abandon the tug. A wrecking harge s*»nt to save the Albion found it break ing to pieces. The Albion was 12 years old and valued at 518.000. Mongolia £endn a Wirelo«* Although the liner Mongolia will not h» here until next week, the big Pa cific Mail steamship is already in wire- Jess communication with this city. A message was received yesterday giving th* liner's position an latitude 30.45 north, longtitude 173.17 ease and con taining the information that all was well. Captain Morton, the Mongolia's commander, who has been ashore for two voyages, is in the city and will re lieve Captain Kitt upon the ship's arrival. To Br Equipped With Wirplen* 'Contracts have been ciosed with the United Wireless telegraph company for the installation of wireless instruments on the steamers Chehalis and Carlos ar.d on the tankers Roma and Whlttier. The Whittier was towed into port the other day with a broken shaft. Having no wireless th*» tanker's predicament might have be«->n serious but for the timely appearance of the freighter Stanley Dollar. The Whittter will be equipped before leaving port. Waler Front Xoles Receipts of lumber yesterday by sea amounted to 1.556.000 feet. The Pacific Mail liner Acapulco will sail today for Panama and way ports with freight and passengers. The Kosmos liner Abeesinia is due today from Hamburg via South and Central America with about 7.000 tons of freight, of which 3.500 tons is for Puget sound ports. When the Abes- Finia leaves here it will be with about !>.f>oo tons of freight, and from this port the liner will go direct to the United Kingdom. •The British steamer Kilehattan, \u25a0which arrived at Honolulu from Nor folk on Monday, will proceed to New castle, Australia, in ballast.
