CAUTION SHOWN K 1
:>;: > ; INAVAUL STREET
NEW .YORK,- Oct.- 110. — The
apathetic .stock- market of today
was Influenced by consideration of
the banking .position and 'the
money, outlook..- - The Saturday
bank statement was' regarded as
enforcing:, the necessity of great
caution in the extension of specu
lative credits. The small addition
to the actual surplus was secured
only by the -scaling down of de
posit liabilities through the -. loan
contraction; and the clearinghouse
loan item was changed only, by
shifting of loans to the other
banks and trust companies, thus
saving the money market from
any / disturbance. The outflow of
cash, however, continues on a lib
eral scale. - \u25a0 .
The forenoon lethargy was as
cribed especially to the desire to
see the report of the unfilled or
ders of the United States steel
corporation for September 30 and
the government report on grain
crop conditions. " -
Prices rose in , response to
United States steel report. The.
decrease of 379.022 tons in the
amount of unfilled , orders during
September was- favorably inter
preted in the light of the August
decrease of 433.803 tons. The de
crease for the quarter was 1,099,
685 tons, compared with a falling
off of 1,144,710 tons during the
preceding.- quarter. From these
comparisons a decreasing, rate of
contraction in the trade activity
was argued. :
The wheat crop has been swelled
to within less 1 than 10,000.000 bush
els of. the 700,000,000 stage. So
bountiful a harvest makes an. ad-,
dition to the wealth of the coun
try calculated to make up vast
deficiencies. '
Prices closed at net gains under
the influence of the crop report.
Bonds were steady. Total sales',
par value, $1,657,000.
United States bonds were un
changed on •\u25a0 call.
E. F. Hutton & Co.'s wire says:
NEW YORK. Oct. 10. — The.
strength in the f-tock market to
day can be attributed to two
factors — the steel tonnage report
for September, which brings down
the orders on hand next to the
worst record in the history of the
company, and .from the fact that
the trade conditions can hardly
be worse.
The government crop report was
another factor and the vital one
for the country, and showed a re
markably fln<» condition for all
crops; hence- -we' find strong fun
damentals for stability and gen
eral advancement in all securities.
The stock market, however, will
be kept in check speculativ«ly Jn
view of th.c money situation, and
politics.

BOSTON, Oct. 10— E% F. Hutton & Co.'s
wire suvs: Coppers opened dull, but the tone
continues very firm. A. better feeling is grow
ing dally in brokerage circles as vrell as with
the public toward copper' shares. The general
feeling is hopeful '. now, whereas it seemed
hopeless a few weeks ago. Arizona Commer
cial No. 5 drill is said to hare encountered
high grade ore Just below the 900 foot level.
The drill shows 17 feet of ; ore and has not

broken, sold fally if. not a shade better than our
quotations. The rang* of Talnes proenred wer<»
from $135 to $240. DriTing horses suitable for
liTery purposes were in . request and. moved at
prices ranging from $95 to> $150. - .-
Good, sound horses over 1,400 pounds do not
have to seek this market, apparently. They «r»
taken at country points at • prices in excess of
what can be procured for them here. As current
valuts for all kinds of horseflesh is decidedly
high for this time of year, dealers look for an
other winter and spring of boom prices.
