MONGOLIA BRINGS A RECORD CARGO Belated* Liners Freight Includes Raw Silk Worth. ssoo, ooo and Big Shipment of Tea HE Pacific Mail liner Mongolia, Captain EL P. Kitt. which arrived from the orient Saturday evening too late to pass quarantine, after the next to slowest passage the big steamer ever made, docked early yesterday at pier 14. The Mongolia's slowest trip was after being ashore Dn Midway Island, and on that occa sion the liner was badly damaged and brought a few hun dred tons of the Pa cific ocean by way of freight. The Mongolia brought 162 cabin passen gers. Most of them were members of an excursion party from Los Angeles, ■who made the round trip on the liner. The liner brought 62 steerage passen gers and 384 Asiatics In the Asiatic steerage. Among the Asiatics were 20 Hindus, 248 Chinese and 116 Japanese. Most of the Japanese Mill be trans ferred today to the liner Mariposa and carried to Tahiti. They are under contract to work on the phosphate isl ands of the south seas. The Mongolia left Hongkong on time and should have been here last Friday. The passengers did not mind the delay, but three- days' tardiness will not help the Pacific Mail company in its fight for the raw silkHrade, in which time is one of the most Im ' portp.nt elements. The — Mongolia brought 747 bales of raw silk. This represents an investment of more than $500,000; on which somebody is paying Interest, which is computed' from day to day. Usually the Mongolia main tains a n knot "gait all the way across. A '■fSttle better than 14 knots was the average fur this trip. The run from Honolulu occupied 6 days 5 hours and 31 minutes, but as neither silk nor pas sengers wore landed for more than 12 hours lat^r.as the result of the liner's arriving too late to pass quarantine, the time from Honolulu was practically 6 days IS hours, or about 24 hours longer than usual. Captain Kitt will be relieved today by. Captain H^nry Morton, who has be£ii on l^ave for two voyages of the ship. Kitt has not had a happy time »r cemmamier of the big liner. On his first voyage lie put the ship ashore in :t Japanese harbor, and in explaining to the inspectors here how it happened volunteered the information that a Japanese gunboat had refused, him as sistance. Japanese Consul Nagai cabled a copy of ECltt's charges to the Japa nese government, which came back v-iih a prompt denial. "When R. P. Schwerin arrived in Japnn he was met v-ith a request for Captain Kitt's head : j .s the price of Japanese good will for his line. ■\Vhcn the Mongolia on its second voyage arrived in Yokohama Pchwerin v.-as out in a launch to meet Kitt. The . liner entered the harbor at 8 o'clock a. in. As he was taking the big ship to its mooring buoy Kitt. on the liner's l-rMse, caught sight of the vice presi dent and general manager. Instead of watching the buoy he. kept his s eye on Pchwerin. with the result that he Imissed t!ie buoy, but nearly hjt the breakwater. Schwerin threw his nice white Panama hat into the bottom of the launch, uttered a few bitter words of criticism and ordered the launch hack to th<» beach. It was just as well that lie did so., for Kitt took, the Mon golia out of the harbor again and did rot reappear until 4 o'clock fn the afternoon. , . . - • Schwerin sent word for Kitt to pack his clothes and leave the ship. The order wais obeyed, but was rescinded lat«>r when it was found that Captain Saunders. who was to have relieved" Kitt, could not leave the Manchuria on account of the latter ship being in. quarantine. The Mongolia brought 10,487 tons of fright, one of the biggest cargoes the liner has ever carried. The cargo in <luded 747 bales of raw silk, 11.772 .-^jcks of copra. 6,341 rolls. of matting and L'P,061 chests of tea. Among the passengers were: FROM HONGKONG Trrd L. Allwi jMIss Ida A.
