HUNDREDS VISIT THE WAR VESSELS Fleet Is Magnet for Sunday Crowds and Tugs Are Busy AH Day ATTLESHIP row was the chief point of jtitraction along: the water front yesterday- The day was Ideal for bay excursions and the .big war craft were spick and span. Hundreds of visit ors crowded In a steady stream of tugs that piled to and from the ships. i^V.'-T; A notable feature of the crowd was that it was com posed largely of women and girls. Gay colors and pretty headgear and dresses enlivened the otherwise somber colored tugs. Not since the ships have been at anchor In battleship row has such a large throng roamed their decks. <"- , However, within the coming week the attraction will be increased when the Maryland. South Dakota and West Virginia will come down from Mare Island. The fleet will then go south for target practice. Commander* to Chansre Before leaving the ceremony of change of commanders will be grone through. Rear Admiral Giles B. Harber will be succeeded to the command by Rear Admiral Edward Barry. It is also understood that the California will cease to be the flagship, as Rear Admiral Barry will take up headquar ters in the West Virginia. The change of commanders is sched uled for November X. Cannons will boom out the salvo to the admiral and , .the colors of Rear Admiral Harber will b«> hauled down, while those of Rear Admiral Barry will be unfurled on the West Virginia. The order from the navy department at Washington will b« read and then the impressive cere mony will follow. Rear Admiral Harber will be rowed ashore with part of his- belongings. The boat will be manned entirely by naval officers from the flagship and music will be played from the decks if the" battleship. This is an old naval custom and has been followed in slm- j lr:r changes in American naval circles. Targets Dreak Loose Tyro targets designed to serve in the target practice of the torpedo fleet now n Santa Barbara channel, after giving the United States, tug Navajo much trouble in the -bay yesterday .morning, finally broke the tow line when out of the heads and floated around, ouffeted by the seas, for some time oefore being made fast again. It was :hen too late to continue the voyage md the Xavajo put back to port with t'»e 'insurgents." The targets measure 3ux6o feet and will be "shot full of holes" when in service. PresitJent Meyts Vo% The President came in yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock from Seattle. There were 325 passengers and a big rargo of freight. The voyage was fair all th«» way down : until Saturday at midnight, when a heavy -fog and heavy were, encountered. When off Dux berry reef Captain Cousins '! saw the, bark Amy Turner in what appeared a disabled condition. The news was flashed into marine circles, but it de veloped that th« Amy Turner had taken off her topsails and yards on the out bound voyage. She was loaded with lumber in from Astoria at 5 o'clock. California to Lay l"p The State of California will be taken off the San Francisco-Eureka run and substituted by tile City of Topeka/Cap tain Gielow. The Santa Rosa or;, the State of California, will be laid.., up some time this week. v ' "~~ ...Water Front Xoten - The steamer Casco, Captain Ahlin; came In yesterday morning from Port- Land with a big sleepy owl boxed in a crate. The bird had been captured. by Mate X. A. Carlson, who spied It asleep in the rigging one morning and climbed up after it. The owl took up its roost in the yards of the Casco one night when off Cape Blanco.' "."-\u25a0, ! The Tenyo '"Maru will be fumigated next Thursday, as traces, of T-odents have been found that indicate the big ship Is becoming a nesting place for rats. Wednesday the last of the cargo will be taken off. This was made up largely of silk, most of which has been shipped east already. Tuesday at 1 p. m. the Mongolia of the Pacific Mail line will sail for the .Orient. Captain Henry Morton will re sume command- after his leave of ab sence, and Captain Kidd will go on the Panama run. There is a large pas- i senger list and a big shipment of mer- ! chandiee. The KoTea left Honolulu yesterday for this port on its return from China and Japan.
