PLASTERERS' UNIONS
GAIN MANY MEMBERS
Returning Delegates Report In
crease of 2,000 During the
Last Year
O. M. BOYLE
H| ; After an absence of
1 several weeks, in
: ."which they attend
ed the seventh biennial convention of
the operative plasterers' international
association at Columbus, O-. the dele
gates representing the Pacific coast
unions have returned. It is claimed
thst preat progress has been made by
the association, and .the 138 delegates
ivho attended the convention repre
sented 17.000 members. This was the
twenty-first convention and the seventh
biennial. In the last year 2,000 mem
ber? v.-ere 3dded and preparations have
been made to carry on extensive or
ganization work. Among: the important
—ork of the convention was the in
creasing of the death benefit from $50
to $2^o. In order to meet the additional
expense an added per capita tax was
ordered. Much time was consumed In
discussing proposed changes and addi
tions to the laws. John Donlin of Chi
cago was chosen president. T. A. Sculls"
Fecretary and Joseph Mcllveen editor of
the official journal, which will be
printed in Pittsburg. Headquarters are
now located in Middletown. O-. but the
convention instructed the president and
executive board to find a new. location.
The change will, however, probably
rot be made until after the next meet
ing of the parent body, which will be
in Milwaukee.
The retail shoe clerks' union No. 410.
st its last meeting, received a most
encouraging report from its committee
out visiting the various labor unions,
requesting union men, and women to
demand the clerks' card when buying
coods. Every union visited so far, it
is reported, has promised to patronize
only union clerks henceforth.
Arrangements have been completed
for an at home social by the local to
its members and friends Thursday
night. November 10. at Clerks* hall,
343 Van Ness avenue, consisting of en
tertainment and dancing.
The local is in a prosperous condition
and is adding new names to Its mem
bership at each meeting.
Dispatches have been received in This
city by cigar makers 1 - union from Tam
pa, Fla., that the books and safe of
the union have been seized by the city
authorities, and that three prominent
members have been arrested. Two of
the members of the union have been
lianged. and an attempt to wipe out
si] vestige of unionism is being made,
according to information received by
the local union. , : : k--i
International President Joseph Valen
tine of the iron molders* union will
leave San Francisco for the east next
Thursday morning. Valentine has spent
r-ome time on the coast, and has become
thoroughly familiar with the trade con
ditions as they exist here.
President McHugh was in the chair
»t th« Saturday night meeting of "build
ing material teamsters* union No. 216.
Two candidates were obligated and six
applications received. The usual weekly
assessment to the Los Angeles strike
fund was paid. The first meeting in
November will be a called one to re
vis* the bylaws and constitution. All
members are requested to be present.
At a recent meeting of leather_worK
*xs' union on horse goods No. 57. T\ 11
liam T. "Ward was chosen a delegate to
The international convention, which will
be held in Chicago, beginning Novem
ber 15.
Mail to th* labor council yesterday

of this country ajid Canada to the
