Basket Ball Teams Will
Clash Tonight
Facred Heart and Commercial high
school basket ball teams will meet in
the first of a series of three games for
the Classy Clancy trophy tonight at
the Tamalpais club court. Twenty
fourth and Folsom streets.
Both teams have been practicing
daily for the same and the players ap
pear to be in fine condition and ready
to put up a fast game. Sabred Heart
will use almost the same lineup that
ployed in the Amateur athletic league
series last year.
French will be mfssing in the lineup.
V>ut Heilman. who replaces him. looks
like a very able player. Sacred Heart
will select its team from the following
players: Dennis, Hunt. Meagher. Heil
:r.an. Cummins. J. Riordan. L. Riordan,
U Murphy. T. Cummins, J. Doherty
and J- Tehaney.
Commercial high team is very strong

St. Mary's II Ties With

OAKLAND, Xov. 9. — The second
rugby teams of SL Mary's college and
Santa Clara college played a tie game,
0-0, on St. Mary's college v campus to
day. The ball was kept going through
out. Bernard of Santa Clara made" a
35 yard run in the second half. French
of St. Mary's college was strong In
kicking. The teams . were evenly
matched. They will play a third game
next week. St. Mary's college having
won the first in the series.
FAST TIME MADE BY FIAT.
SAVANWAH. Ga, Nov. 9.— An indica
tion that the grand prize race, day after
tomorrow, may prove a record breaker,
was afforded in today's practice, when
David B. Brown, driving a Flat, cov
ered the full 17.3 mile course at the
rate of 76 miles an hour. Betting
seems to favor the. foreign cars. Hem
ery driving a Benz and Nazarro a Fiat,
being the ruling favorites.

catcher, signed with the New York Na
tionals-.for 1911 today as did Arthur
Shafer, substitute infielder. Catcher Ed
Sweeney. Pitcher Jack "Warhop and

contracts for 1911 to the New York
American league club.

BERLIN. Xov. 9.— Dr. Emanuel Lask
er. holder of the world's championship,
beat D. Janowski. French champion, in
the first game for the- chess champion
ship of the world, played at the.Ker
kau palace in this city yesterday.
The match is a -contest of eight games
up, draws not counting.
