Business was at much lower ebb, though display ing , a broader .tendency, which took in such specialties as Gen eral Electric, Western Maryland and American Beet Sugar, but the bulk of the trading was limited, as usual, to less than a half score of active Issifes. The annual report of the South ern Pacific company for 1909-10. showing earnings at the rate of almost 13 p«r cent of the common stock, an increase of about 3 per cent over the previous year, im parted a firmer tone to the Harrl man group. The gain, however, represented in large part the cash received by Southern Pacific for Its former holdings of Wells- Fargo stock. Money In London was in ex cess of all demand and the lower private discount, was • probably basej on expectations of a fur ther reduction of the bank rate tomorrow. A small addition to the Bank of England's gold hold ings was announced. In this market London bought sparingly of the Harrlman issues. United States steel and Amalgamated copper. Foreign exchange advanced al most as sharply as It declined y«?ster, lay, implying that the fall was ajmost entirely of specula tive origin. . Nevertheless, the rate is still withii? the import point and the belief that some en gagements will be made before the expiration of the year /still prevails. The general bond market was steady. Total sales (par value), $1,559,000. United States bonds were un changed on call. NEW YORK. Dec. 14. —E. F. Hutton & Co.'s wire says: "Operations Jn securities today by Important Interests was for betterment in values. Stocks were well taken from the opening:, though no aggressive tactics on the bull side were in evidence. Jt is believed, however, that bank ers' syndicates wished to keep the heavy short Interest intact until later In the week or the first of the new year when a strong bull demonstration will be made. Sen timent is universally bearislv on stocks, which has left the Wall street position subject to a sharp rise at any time as a result of securities being In strojig han Js. There was little new on the trade situation worthy of mention... but tMs factor has lost its weight as a market Influence at the pres ent." :-'.-:• Col So r&ext 4»^s 07%11'ninn Pacific 4R..3ntsi Del & Ilnd cv 4s. 08 Dn cv 4s 103^ i Den & Rio G 4s. 94 I Ur> Ist & rcf 4SJV&6U Do ref 5s P<» D S Robber 65..102i L . i Pi«tillers r«s 77% IT S Steel 2<i 55.. 103^ Erie prior lien 4s.
