10 PRODUCERS LOWER SURPLUS OF OIL Between 7 and 8 Per Cent of Output Goes Into Storage at Present Time Fears that an overproduction of oil had created a storage supply that might at any moment inundate the market -were relieved in a measure yes terday when the announcement, was made that the surplus output was less than S per cent of the whole produc tion. This figure was given out author itatively as the result of a compilation that had been made with the greatest care. The oil market has of late been in an uncertain condition with the over hsnginp shadow -of a growing surplus. In order to reach conclusions that might have the merit of accuracy local arencits undertook a systematic inves tigation. The quantity now. going into storage is given 'as between 7 and S per cent of the output. During the- last few months there has been a curtailment in the larger fields of the state. There has been a cessa tion of drilling activity, although de velopment is proceeding alor.g normal lines. Some wells have been capped and others held down.;.': rnonixii of storage • A pressing problem- Is storage. The Standard is credited with 13.000,000 barrels in warehouse, and the Inde pents with .approximately 12,000.000. More tankage is imperative. The inde pendents are hurrying work on their big storage tanks at San Luis Obispo, but these will offer only momentary relief. Reports are current of several im mense contracts and rumor has it that in making them there has been a shad iJSff ot price. Heretofore there have >i*«n few f=ales below S3 c«>nts a barrel, but it is now reported that a recent deal calls for s lower figure. The report was circulated that the price was as low as 55 cents, but this has not been confirmed. The subject has awakened the interest of electric power operators. At 85 cents, oil and electric power were in keen competi tion. Some of the large manufactur ing establishments on the coast adopt od electric power to save the initial expense of installing the oil burning machinery. - ■. V,~' Rumors of a 55 cent rate on* oil have o2used electric power men to figure on oil a* a generator of power in compe tition with water. The auxiliary plants use the petroleum fuel and a basis of comparison is not far to seek. MANDAHD'S OIL AM) GAS The Standard oil company is offering "0 cents at the well, but it is stated that few operators have been willing to sign at this figure. The agency cer tificates carry a guaiantee of 35 cents and the storage, it is felt, will not eat m\> the difference. Tho operations of the California natural gas company in Kern county are being watched with keen interest. The company, popularly understood to be a subsidiary organization of tho Standard, is arranging to pipe the gas from the wells in B'lena Vista hills into Kakersfie!d. T'-.e prico at which tjie gas will be retailed has not been an nounced, but it will be far below the t-urrent rates. The extension of the system will de pend entirely upon the production of the. Buena Vista wells. It is well known airing local operators that the Standard regards it^s gas wells as among Its most promising assets. Talk of pipe lines to the large centers oi the state for the distribution of gas is premature. That the Standard ha* Rom<± such plan in mind .if the supply can be adequately developed, however, is certain. REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS Sarah A. Cosprove ti> Margaret J. Nolan Will Be Located at Sacramento During the Coming Session O. M. BOYLE . John I. Xolan is making arrange- /: merits, to go to Sacramento next Monday. He will ' be the legislative agent of the labor coun cil during the session of the legisla ture. ' Nolan will be^associated with ot^er agents of labor' bodies. Nolan will visit the labor council every other Friday arid report upon the progress being made. -.:■". '•■ Thn "buiMinj* of the 'labor lemple of Sacramento has progressed s/> far that unions are now arranging meeting nights in the structure,. . Owing. to 4he holiday season many unions that, usually meet each week 'have adjourned until next week. It vis expected that, after New Tear day. or ganizing work of the various labor bodies in the city will be renewed." Cooks' union No. 44 served a Christ mas dinner to its members and spent several hours listening to speeches by some of. the older m*n. The affair wag voted a success by. all present. Much praise was bestowed upon the committee in charge of the dinner, and especially C. C. Haugaard, the chair man. Waiters 1 union No. 30 gave its usual Christmas dinner to. its members. About 500 were present. President M. P. Scott acted as toastmaster, and told of the rapid rise of No. 30 to one of the most important locals 'in .this city. In _ his usual humorous way he de scribed the difficulties experienced by the organization in gaining a firm foot hold: and related many anecdotes rel ished by the members. 'Among those who responded to toasts were Daniel Foster, C. Bishop. I. Carden, Samuel Taback, Mrs. A. C. Beck, treasurer of waitresses' union, and Bertha. Cooper. The executive " officers of waitresses' union were guests of honor. The twenty-second anniversary ball of carpenters', union No. 483 will be given soon in Carpenters' hall- in Ful ton street. The movement started in this state a few months ago to organize the mi gratory workers is spreading .rapidly throughout the country. The? Ameri can federation of labor at its recent convention decided to put trained or ganizers in the field. Early in January William E. McEwen. labor commission er of the state of Minnesota, will visit the northern part of that state as a representative of the American federa tion of labor and inagurate a plan which will involve the bringing into the fold of organized labor the migra tory workers -in that section of the state. A similar campaign is mapped out for other states. W. A. Coie will leave shortly for Indianapolis to attend the meeting of the executive board of the brother hood of carpenters and joiners. This board meets every, three months and Cole represents this district. He will be gone several weeks. The regular monthly meeting of typographical union No. 21 scheduled for last Sunday was adjourned without transacting any business owing to the fact that no quorum was present. Im portant business whiheh should have been taken up will lie over till the January meeting.
