' •-- - ,".; ■»' ■. •■ . Trading throusrhout the session ' was small in; volume, If surface , conditions may, be accepted ..the ' hea\iness of the list "was largely*; due to the aggressive. short sell- < ing -by the profe.-«ional group, ] which only recently was more or., less conspicuous for the extent ■ of its commitments on the other ' side. .. . .■ The closing of- a -local state bank, .whose troubles are com monly believed to be an after math of the panic of 1907, while in no particular sense a market factor, was hardly, helpful to the bull accounts. -The bank's diffi culties, however, served to call attention- to the Jatest report of the state banking department, which demonstrates- the strong position of a majority- of these institutions compared with a year ago. The London stock exchange was closed today and European markets generally were dull and featureless. The bond market was irregular. Sales, par value, $2,233,000. United States bonds were un changed on call. E. F. Hutton & Co.'s wire says: "While there was no real news to affect business or the security market, some selling occurred by the room traders in the early half of the session today as the result of a small bank failure here, and while this failure was absolutely without special significance as re lates to the general banking, sit uation, which Is exceedingly sound, it caused much comment In speculative quarters, where an endeavor was made to weaken the market, but without material ef fect. . Continued discouraging re ports from the steel industry out look were accentuated by-the-im pression that some sharp cuts in" steel commodities ye-cm 1 " after January 1. The selling in Steel common, however, seemfed to be traced to professionals \ en tirely, with only casual support from banking interests, which would readily account for . the heavy market today." 00l So riext 4%s 9714 Union Pacific 45.. 101% Del & Hnd cv 4s. 98Vi no cv 4s 103^5 Do ref 4s 93 Do lrt & ref 4s. 9C T A Do ref 5s 89% U S Rubber 65... 102% Distillers 5s .76 US Steel 2d 55.. .104$ Brie prior Hen 4s.
