EXPOSITION COMES AS A STIMULUS TO BUILDING ama canal, and the consequent stream of immigration Into California, will continue in as great prosperity as dur ing the fair. The places vacated by visitors here for th.. world show will be filled by travelers and immigrants coming through the canal: California and all the steamship and colonization companies will have agents in Europe telling of the advantages of the Golden state, and advising a transfer thither. Then the canal itself will attract globe trotters in general, and the steady stream of travelers will, with the tide of home seekers, equal the crowds at tracted here by the fair. As the exposition and the canal will open up simultaneously, and the canal bo well In operation, and the stream of Irrigation and travel well under way by the time the exposition closes, no lapse, even, is anticipated in the call for residences, Hats . and apartment houses here, and no cessation in busi ness activity. ■> ■ - " JOHN CASSARETTO ■'•"- ■'■ • **"' ■ - - ' * V / ■ -*■"'■■'■', ' - CONTRACTOR FOR Gravel, Sand, Crushed Rock, Cement and Grading :.-.."•*.• ■ - ■ . Surely a golden age of prosperity is opening for property owners. The total of $22,873,942 in building contracts for 1910, large though it Is. represents a small sum, indeed, when compared to the millions spent in build ing after the fire, but lt is an evidence of a healthy business tone. After the fire the building contracts were nearly $6,000,000 per month. DURABILITY FOR NEW BUILDINGS Best of Material Enters Into the Structures Former Mayor Edward R. Taylor once gave it as his opinion that there is no building material better able to resist weather, earthquake shock, time, wind and water than brick laid in ce ment. It Is certain that this material, which served the race thousands of years ago, is today in some of San Francisco's best and sturdiest build ings.- Many experts prefer brick to every other material. It insures a safe structure and it can. be used for most artistic ornamentation. Another feature of San Francisco's building since the fire is the superior quality of the millwork used in the hundreds of modern structures. What ever or wherever the building, It may be assured that the millwork will.be well done. The window frames do not warp and pull apart, and the wood work is good throughout. SAN FRANCISCO «-——^.-.". .„'.,'.,..,,..,. district make brick a very popular ma terial there. San Francisco has not yet, as has Denver, for instance, appre ciated the value of brick as a material for residence building, but it can be put to excellent use in constructing homes, and fully as much in the way of ornamentation, porch construction, etc., can be done with it as with wood. The hundreds of brick houses in Denver, one after the other, without a single frame house in sight, presents a beau tiful view. This climate, too, is one in which brick houses perform the best of service and wear out the years without deterioration. And the best of brick is made right around the bay and han dled by San Francisco companies. 23
