March 13.—One of the group of supreme court deci sions which Wall street long has awaited with some trepidation, up holding the constitutionality of the corporation tax law, brought about merely a brief'decline on the stock exchange when it was announced today. Within a Tew mimHes stocks, bounded T back to the best prices of the. day and later made further improvement.' Active stocks in most cases closed with good fractional gains. The action of the market was regarded as indicative of its present strong position. The small supply of floating stocks, the eagerness of the bear traders to cover-and'the knowl edge that' the largest holdings were in strong hands combined to. prevent substantial losses. Speculative operations of the day centered largely about' Atehi son, which closed one point higher. Minneapolis and St. L.ouls pre ferred sold at nearly 20 points tT*> low the" last transaction prior to today, which was November. One of the.largest copper pro ducing companies was reported, today to have, made a further re duction in the price of Its high grade ore. Western railroads re ported a shrinkage in tonnage for last week. Rates for time money showed still further ease today and the market for prime mercan tile paper was easier in tone. The unusual financial strength of the west doubtless has Its hearing on the continued low rates at this center. The general bond market was irregular. Total sales (par value), •$3,001,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. NEW YORK, March IS.- T E.; F. Hutton & Co.'s wire says: "The market was irregular in the early afternoon, with fitful bursts of ac tivity. The undertone was strong, and although -business was still largely in the hands of the trad- Ing element there was a firm belief that after the decisions in the anti-trust cases were handed down a decided increase of public ' in terest could be looked for unless the decisions were of an exceed ingly drastic nature. The floor presented an unusually deserted appearance between 12 and 1 p. m., when the supreme court was reading its decisions. . This fact clearly indicated that the anti trust decisions were not expected, and when the definite news on the point came it was without marked result. The street's guess was that the decisions would not be ren dered before April." Eric prior lien 4?.
