BRISK OPENING; LISTLESS CLOSE NEW YORK. April ;20.Prices moved listlessly within a narrow rang* on : the stock exchange to day and the volume of. business fell far below -that of * the two preceding; days. During; the first hour of the session • speculation was broad and active, with an up ward swing following moderate declines at the opening. Trade fell off thereafter and the market was lifeless. The affairs of the Gould rail roads continued to hold the chief place of Interest. Missouri Pacific was feverish all day. moving back and forth within a range of nearly 2 points. The uncertainty of the situation was a drag on the stock, which, after a slump late in the day, rallied and closed unchanged. The Harriman stocks also were affected by the same influence. Union Pacific, in particular, was weak, closing with a loss of a point. United States steel was under pressure most of the day. Reports of probable price cutting of steel and iron products affected the shares unfavorably, and there was considerable short selling. Even the Increased activity of congress and the administrative authorities at "Washington. In con nection with the Mexican diffi culty, failed to bring forward that question as a disturbing factor in the financial world. Bonds were steady. Total sales (par value), $2,098,000. *.v**:: United States bonds were un changed on call. NEW YORK. April 20.— E. F. Hutton it Co.'a wire says: The stock market was irregular today, but the undertone was not weak, despite the continued efforts of traders to work prices down again. There was no news of Im portance and, while the profes sional element is hoarlshly in clined, important interests main tain their passively bullish atti tude toward the market, based on the Improvement in | fundamental conditions. It is probable that the market will be rather dull until the supreme court decisions are announced, but there is believed to be an overextended short Inter est outstanding: which adds strength to the technical condi tion.
