UNION S.S. CO. TO BUILD NEW SHIP Contract for 10,000 Ton Steamer for Canadian Ports' Trade Is Let to Browns HE Union Steam ship company, oper ating between this coast and New Zea land ports, has just let a contract for a 10.000 ton steamer, which will trade with Canadian ports. The Browns on the Clyde have the contract and will build a thor oughly modern ship with a large freighting capacity and accommoda tions for 700 pas sengers. The Union Steam- anip company's traffic out of this port has been increasing so rapidly in the 2ut few years that the Maitai and Aorangi are now inadequate to handle the freight and passengers. The New Zealand firm is therefore planning to build two more large trans- Pacific liners to take the place of the little vessels which have become so familiar in this port. Lumber S<hoonen Race Two of the best known and fastest schooners on the coast sailed from Ta coma Saturday for San Pedro with *^ "ge shipments of lumber, and local shipping men are looking forward to the finish of a keenly contested race. The E. K. Wood, Captain Han/en, and the C. L. Smith. Captain Carlson, are familiar to every mariner on account of the coastwise records they have made. Both were built in Port Blakely, the birthplace of the fastest wind jammers on the Pacific, and they fre quently have the same run. They carry about 700,000 feet of lumber on this voyage, and since a race is on they are expected to make steamer time down t*c ooast. All the skippers out or this port yesterday were looking for ward expectantly to sighting the speedy schooners on tneir coastwise runs. Spokane Out of Drjdock The Pacific coast steamer Spokane, which v. as beached in Plumper bay a few months ago, is just out of the Seattle drydocKS and is undergoing interior repairs. The salvage work on this steamer was done in record time Thirty days after the accident, which resulted in a large hole in the ship's side, the Spokane had been floated, patched and brought to Seattle under its own steam. fifteen new plates were put in and the major part of the repairs to the machinery and furnish ings damaged by salt water will be completed long before the steamer is scheduled to resume the Alaska ex cursion run. The total cost of salvage and overhauling wm not greatly ex ceed $2'J,000. Bannockbarn> Cargo Damaged Since, the work of unloading the cargo of the British steamer Bannock burn, Captain Dent, began a few days ago it has been discovered that a large part of the cargo, consisting chiefly of steel rod*, was damaged, by unloading and reloading in London and many shipping men are dubious about the value of the shipment in its present condition. , ; ■ The; Bannockburn, from Antwerp for this port, was beached at Dover, March 3, after a 'collision with the British steamer James Westoll. A few :: day« later it was floated and towed to Lon don, where the entire cargo was taken fiom the hold and the damage repaired. v this process the steel rods were *oent and twisted and thrown back into the hold .in a tangled mass.- The steamer arrived here August 19 and recently began unloading the 4.000 tons of rods consigned, to Parrott & Co. ■';* It is- said that It will cost more to straighten the rods . for the purpose for which they are intended than the entire shipment is worth. Tug Pedro Breaks Down ? While on a fishing cruise yesterday morning-, th« fishing tug- Pedro broke down off Point Reyes and the engineers were unable to repair the broken ta'l shaft. The tug: Farragut, belonging to the same company, the Western Fish- Ing' company, discovered " th# Pedro's plight and went to its assistance at . a. m. -The Pedro came into port* in tow of the Farragut at 10:30 a. m. yes terday.' ; •>->::;■.- is.': -,.-//-;,■ - - .--: . \ Water Front >*ote« The Pacific Mail liner Persia Captain Lockett, reported 2,648 miles from this port at 8 o'clock Saturday night. .•> v The Pacific coast steamer Queen, •which arrived here yesterday morning sighted the bark S. C. Allen, bound from Honolulu for Fort Bragg. -, off Point Reyes in the early morning. ? The Standard Oil company's tanker Niagara sailed yesterday with a full cargo of oil for Mogi. The steamer President. Captain Thomas, of - the Pacific Coast company, came, -yesterday afternoon from Seat tle with v a large cargo of freight and a full passenger list. .•' . . ', The tug Relief, ■ formerly a red stack, now owned in Eureka, arrived here yesterday in ballast. - r NEW DRYDOOX I» USE {Special Dispatch to The Call] '-.
