It was announced after the directors' meeting yesterday that the company had connected up this summer a motor load of 3,618 horse power, in mining, industrial and agri cultural pursuits. The mining and in tr'trial use of power may be expected ft continue throughout the year, but tht irrigation uses are. of course, con fined to the dry part of the crop grow ing season. It may be argued, however, that the winter brings its own call for elec tric energy. The summer months con tain less night hours, and. therefore, less need of lighting, than the winter months by a surprisingly large num ber of hours. June has but 277 hours of darkness, while December has 447 hours o 4 f darkness, and it is calculated that the extra burning of lights In winter compensate for the loss in reve nue from irrigating purposes. The order suspended was that of June 29, in which the Tidewater Southern Railway company was granted permission to issue $3,500,000 in stock and $750,000 in bonds under certain restrictions. One of these was that the companj- should receive at least 80 per cent of the par value of its stock on all sales made, salesman being al lowed 20 per cent. But according to statements tiled with the commission and investigations made by employes of the commission stock has been sold at as high as $125, it is said, of which only $80 has gone to the company, it is understood also that the commis sion's investigation showed that Byron Re&rce was receiving a commission for turning over the stock of the merged Tidewater and Southern and Tidewater Southern to the present Tidewater Southern Railway company. In its order yesterday the commis sion says: It is hereby ordered that said opinion and order of this commis sion, dated June 29, 1912. in the proceeding entitled as above, be and the same are hereby suspended so that applicant is prohibited from issuing or in any way disposing of any stock, bonds or other evidences of indebtedness until applicant shall have satisfied this commis sion that it has made good said violations of said order and until the further order of this commis sion. THE SAN FRAKCTRCO QA-J, THURSDAY. SEPTEMBER 19. 1912. Uncle Sam Gathering Facts About Financial Conditions NEW YORK, Sept. 18.—The financial community was rather more interested today in the visit ln this city of a representative of the treasury department than ln the movement of stocks. It is understood the treasury official consulted with banking interests regarding a pos sible money stringency for the purpose of laying exact facts before •secretary MacVeagh. Banks suffered a further loss of cash and call money, which opened at 5 per cent, hovered around that point for the greater part of the dAy Time rates were unchanged. When the stock market opened most of the leading issues, particularly the anthracite shares. Harri man and Hill issues and numerous industrials and special stocks were up from substantial fractions to a point. Some of the gains were ex tended 1n the forenoon. Realizing sales and short selling wiped out a large part of the rise In the early afternoon and ln the final hour, few if any Important advances remained. Reading was weakest of the leaders, with consid erable pressure against United States Steel and some of the coppers, none of which had participated materially in the early upward move ment. Bonds were at first inclined to harden, but became irregular with the late reactions in stocks. Total sales, par value $2,650,000. united States government bonds were unchanged on call. NEW YORK, Sept. 18.— E. F. Hutton & Co.'s wire says: "Stocks today reacted In the late afternoon, transactions being en tirely natural, Ln view of the realizing sales by those who had partici pated in Tuesday's advance, and of short selling by those who had not. ' The street gave curiously little attention to the statement of for eign commerce of the United States for August, which showed both in imports and exports the largest totals of any corresponding month ln the history of the country. 'TTtah copper sold off rather sharply on the strike of miners at the Bingham Canyon camp. Tf the strike should continue for any consider able length of time tt might cause an advance in the price of the metal and help the market for the stocks of other copper companies. • *_. r« renKth ,n Unlted States Rubber, which sold above 53, compared with 51 at Tuesday close, was said to be in anticipation of conditions in the crude rubber market, which would enable the company to ob tain a supply of raw material on favorable terms. There was consid erable pressure on Reading, and. compared with the high prices of the forenoon, that stock suffered a larger decline than the other standard issues. The increase of activity in the bond market was regarded as a hopeful sign. We believe that the stock market Is shaping Itself for a good move later."
