SYNOPSIS OF WEATHER CONDITIONS
The pressure continues high over the northern
half of the PaclSc coast and also over the great
basin. A moderate depression overlies Arizona
and New Mexico. Licht rain has fallen Ig Colo
rado. New Mexico and Oklahoma, and thunder
storms arc reported In the Pecos valley and also
the valley of .he Arkansas. East of the Missis
sippi the weather is generally clear and pleas
ant. There bas been a sharp fa" in temperature
from Missouri to New York. At Chicago it I*
24 degrees coolor, at St. Louis IS degrees, at
Buffalo 18 degrees aud at Pittsburg 14 degrees.
On the Pacific coast temperatures are below
the normal. In the great valley of California
afternoon temperatures rauge from 74 to 70 de
grees.

the U S custom cutter Hartley this morning
down the bay as far as Harbor View. The
launch kept on, headed for sea. The Hartley
tired on It. but the launch did not stop, and the
Hartley gave up the chase and returned.

sailed this morning in pursuit of launch S3mson
No. 2, suspected of smuggling, returned at 1
p. m., after giving chsse for about eight miles
down the coast. Thick fog; could see nothing
of the launch.

KLAMATH FALLS. Ore.. Oct. T. - A storm
that was general over northern California and
southern Oregon caused the wrecking of tit"
steamer Oakland on I'ppcr Klamath lake yeatt*
day. The steamer sank with 53.000 worth <>r
lumber. Captain Reed and the crew narrowly
death by drowning. The wind made
heavy breakers on the lake and wrecked a barge
being tewed by the steamer as If It were I toy.
The steamer White Pelican rescued the crew.
