Sierra Nevada led the upward movement. Jumping from 17c to 30c. with large trades recorded at the high figure in the final hour of trading. Early Gains in New York Stock Market Followed by Setback NETS" YORK, Oct. 15.—Taking Its cue from abroad, where all ex changes were stronger as a result of the support tendered by substantial Interests, the stock market here opened active and almost buoyant. Gains of one or two points were numeroufi In the first hour. In the final hour a selling movement of moderate proportions wiped out the greater part of the early gains and the market cloaed with an Irregular undertone. The setback coincided with advices from Chicago that the wound suffered by Colonel Roosevelt waa a serious One. The strength of the coppers was directly traceable to the sharp re bound In these metals abroad and to the belief that the directors of the Amalgamated company, at their meeting later this week, will advance the present rate of dividend. Money waa more abundant in ..this market today, but the tone held firm, with a slight advance in 90 day rates. Bonds were firm, but without special feature. Total sale?, par value, $2,050,000. United States government bonds were unchanged. NEW YORK, Oct. 15.— E. F. Hutton & Co.'s wire says: "The market today gave signs of resuming Its advance. (Strength in copper stocks was the most noticeable feature, but the good buying of Reading continued, and in Steel the demand was sufficient to absorb all offerings. On the whole, the market seemed to possess underlying strength to a large de_ gree. There was a fair demand for stocks in the loan crowd. All the traders said the selling of Bteel was of good quality, but they paid no at tention to the buying, yet as the tendency of the price was to advance, the buying must have been better than the selling. Bethlehem Steel was a strong feature, crossing 50 and showing as much strength above as below that figure. Some observers said there was a very interesting light in Reading, but that the bulls apparently had the best of it. It was quite generally expected that the Bank of England would increase its rat" to 6 per cent on Thursday. Such a development would probably be found to have been discounted. The easier tendency of money at this renter *fas indicated by a renewal of the rate of 4% per cent for call loans. Amal gamated Copper was well bought on expectation of 6 per cent dividend rate at Thursday's meeting, as was Reading on segregation talk. Corn Products was also well bought on the cheapness of corn. Considering the heavy foreign selling recently the stock market, to our view, has acted very'well and we believe that stocks held through any further temporary irregularlty will show good profits later." Western Power bond sold on the Stock and Bond exchange yesterday, though many were offered. The price at which the transaction was made was $88.75. a decline of an eighth from the figure at which the bonds have ruled for a long period A sale of three of the bonds at $88.75 also was reporteu among the morning street sales. Such a sielling campaign has been started that apparently it was decided yesterday by those behind the issue that they would not support it until the flurry has blown over. Rumors of troubles in tne company's organization have been circulated for some time prior to the Inau guration of the selling movement, and now that the bear raid is being made new rumors are being put out. .. Asociated Oil stock was off an eighth in the morning session, but in the afternoon went back to $14 50. Only one sale was made at each session, how ever. Considerable comment is being directed at the strength displayed by United Railroads ss. which yesterday brought $65.50. Their progress lately has been constantly upward. Northern California Power stock showed an upward tendency, selling at $40.37%, which is an eighth over Monday's price, though five-eighths under the high price for the stock registered in the recent advance. CHICAGO, Oct. 15.— E. F. Hutton'ft Go's win says: "Wheat -Less warlike early news and de cided weakness in all of the European mar kets made a lower wheat market here to day. Belated longs unloaded and some of the short sellers regained sufficient courage to do a little more selling. Thereafter the mar ket was slow and uninteresting at tbe lower level, but tbere was nothing like demoraliza tion appearing and Instead there was every in dication that some of yesterday's largest sellers were reinstating. The decline shut off export business, foreign markets having declined first and farthest. Nevertheless there was a sus picion of export business In Canadian and American spring wheat at the reduced levels. although Winnipeg told of foreign selling of futures there. Cash wheat was relatively easy today. Sales 123.000 bushels. Corn—Ehie weather In all directions, the easiness in wheat, less war news and realiz ing by longs made an easy corn market moat of the day. Foreign markets were easier and (Hstern cash demand slim. Primary receipts showed a sharp falling off. The selling by local traders and longs was overdone early, and there was a recovery later on covering by shorts and reinstating by longs. Cash corn was waafc here, and at outside markets. Some of yesterday's heavy sellers of corn have bought persistently today, reinstating long. The clos ing strength in wheat helped the corn. Cash sales 2W.000 bushels. ••oats —Have followed the other grains weakening early and rallvtng later. Export business very poor most of the day but im proved some after the market began to dis play strength. Trade was not of large pro portions speculatively or otherwise. Shipping i,ales finally footed 300.000 bushels. "Provisions—Values covered a fairlr wide range, and changes were frequent and Irregular although the volume of business was of only moderate proportions. Tbere was rather poor early support, although the start was a little higher on covering by local shorts." Cawh Grain and Provision* CHICAGO.
