GOVERNOR'S SON

"O" Home
The announcement that Archie John-
Fon, pen of the governor, vould not par
ticipate in the amateur boxing tourna
ment which la scheduled to take place
tonight at the Olympic dub, caused a
disappointment te many fans. The
Inability of Johnson to make the "woUcr
weight mark left him without an oppo
nent, as Ernie Clark, the L.os Angeles
ohampiorv*vho was billed t© meet John
son, would not concede the weight.
The matter e.anie up before fhe. di
rrctors of the Olympic club and they
decided to get a substitute. De Witt
Van ''ourt, who is handling; the Lee
Angeles boxers, held f»«t against Clark
boxing , Johnson, as the latter, he al
legea. would have an advantage of 10
pounds in weight. He, claims that
Clark scales 138 pound?, while Johnson
■stepped on the scale yesterday after
noon and tipped the beam at HS%
pounds.
The report that Governor Johnson
interceded with the directors of the
club to have h?s boy barred from >>ox
iiiß Is emphatically denied by President
William Humphrey of the club.
"(Jovernor Johnson has never spoken
to the board of director* of the. club
about his son boxing." he said.
"Whether he ever spoke to any of the
directors jxrsonally. I 4© not know.
The bout between Johnson and Clark
was culled off because Johnson was
too big , for th>' Los Angeles boxer.
Fred SeJby has been substituted to box
Clark."
Young Johnson is greatly disappoint
ed at beinpr unable to appear. He had
trained faithfully fo;- the tournament
and the members of the club were sa.n
g:uin6 fhat he would be returned a
winner. There Mere no available op
ponents ready for him, and ;<x Clark

the various Y. AT. c. A. organizations
around the bay, from the University of
California, from Uncle Sam's navy, be
sides numerous unattached swimmers.
The meet will be in the nature of an
attack on various records which were
recently made official by the local
bran. Ii of th» Pacific association of the
Amateur Athletic union. borne of the
times now standing as records have
unofficially been beaten in this city,
but no record '-an be allotted , unless the
time is made in open competition under
the auspices of the local branch of the
a. a. r.
Before the meet Is started the offi

event will be taU-ulated. Should
records be made the offl<"1;i?3 will cer

the starting and the measurements of
the tank prove to be correct.
The record for the 50 > aids is 25 sec
.ond.s. held by William McWood of the
Olympic club. This looks as if there is
a chance fo:- a new figure with Small,
O'Malley and others hs bead liners.
Small has recently returned from*the
east and yesterday Secretary Hauler
of tiie association received his release
from the Philadelphia association,
which makes him eligible to "compete
in tonight's meet. Small on several
occasions has fteaten the present record
and is expected to win the event to
night.
The 10(1 yards will s»ee Krnie Smith,
the present Pacific association cham
pion, make an attempt to lower Scott
Leaxy's time of 60 seconds. At the
last championship meet Smith was just
2-5 of a second outside the record. To
night he hopes to crack it.
The 2_'O will find the <>ne legged
marvel, IJnc Johnson, as the star com
petitor. He has more than one* beaten
Gaiiey'4 time of J minutes, Hβ 2-5, but
in unofficial meet.?. He will also swim
the quarter mile race, this record also
being held by Gailey with 5 minutes,
