The stork opened at $53.50 and broke to $4S. The same stock was selling around $70 last December. The common stock has dropped from $40 to $24.50 during the same period. It is believed that the weakening of this stock is due to the recent decision of the railroad commission denying the company's petition for authorization to issue bonds and also to the fact that the city is proposing municipal rail roads to compete with the United Rail roads. * * * STANDARD OIL MEETING The annual meeting of the Standard Oil Company of California was held yesterday at Richmond. The old board was re-elected by the stock holders as follows: D. G. Scofleld, W. S. Rheem, F. H. Hillman. K. I. Kingsbury and W. S. Miller. The directors elected of ficers as follows: D. G. The degree of recovery was accentuated by compari son with the period of severe operat ing conditions in the winter months of 1911-12. The favorite issues moved witmn a narrow rang:© and were dull and heavy- Among: the less active stocKs declines were larger, In some cases running up to 6 and 8 points. i-'J- u J l( dation of inactive stocks has been a feature of the recent decline In the general market. Discrimination by banks against such stocks as collateral is said to have led to forced 6elling. The spirited buying movement, which was in progress when the market closed yesterday was not followed up today, although opening prices or a majority of the leading issues were higher. This advantage was quickly lost and a heavy tone developed. The market was subjected to no severe pressure and a few of the prominent stocks moved as much as a point below yesterday's close. Union Pacific, Reading, Northern Pacific and Smelting were most susceptible to pressure. Sentiment was bearish and little heed was given such favorable fac tors as the outlook for peace in Mexico, the more cheerful feeling abroad and an excellent statement for January of Baltimore and Ohio, the first of the large railroads to make its report These conditions apparently were outweighed by the importance given to the proposal to double the state tax on stock transfers. Puch a plan, advanced at a time when the street was already feeling the accumulated weight of its woes, made sentiment decidedly bearish. There was an easier tendency in the money market. Another small gold engagement for South America was arranged today. The loss sus tained from gold exports and subtreasury operations so far this week i-<y the banks is nearly $7,000,000. , „, , i Bonds moved narrowly and irregularly. Total sales, par value, $2,000,000. • „ • United States government bonds unchanged on call. NEW YORK, Feb. 20.— E. F. Hutton & Co.'s wire says: "During the morning session the market was very dull and in absence of bullish im pulse the sentiment was generally bearish. The Albany proposal to in crease tax on sales of securities to $4 had a very depressing effect on sen timent throughout the street. Despite the weakness that developed in a few of the new industrial stocks during the second hour, the general list "Woolworth, after opening at 95, sold down to 90%. United States Rubber sold down from 62Vi to 60%. Goodrich, after a rally on Wednes day to 4 4 sold down to 41%. Chesapeake and Ohio recovered its early decline and some said that even after the necessary financing was arranged the company would be able to maintain its present dividend rate. "Steel preferred was very heavy and some of the traders appeared to be greatly impressed by the action of the stock. A few sales put the stock down to 107*4 This was only a decline of IVj points from Wednesdays close but it was a new low for the year. The selling was said to be of the nature of liquidation. In the late afternoon the market, although very dull retained its firm undertone, but was without special feature." Wllnon'N Vlevre on the Market* (From J. C. Wilson & Co.'o private wire) NEW YORK. Feb. 20.—Prices rul*d steady today for the standard stocks, hut some of the new Industrials became very weak, and failed to recover. The reason for these declines may be. that they hare In many Instances been selling ontirfly too high for the dividends paid, com pared with pood old time seasoned stocks. The selling may be overdone In some of these secur ities and sharp rallies may occur. Generally speaking, we feel friendly to the market for the good stocks, but advise confining operations to issues of merit. Cotton—Prices sagged under the weight of further liquidation and then suddenly rallied to ward the close on short covering. It was a nat ural rally after the recent depression. As the tendency to accumulate a considerable short in terest, sudden upturns are to be expected. Sen timent Is generally bearish. That means, how ever, that rallies, even sharp ones, may occur from time to time as shorts liquidate. On these rallies wi» still favor sales. BOSTON, Feb. 20.— Yesterday's rally was well maintained today, especially In the local cop pers. The level of prices la so low that liqui dation has practically ceased. Heavy sales of copper are being made around 15c, and the situa tion is improving every day. CHICAGO, Feb. 20.—Wheat —Wheat had an easy spell early on the reports of some rain and enow and prospects for more, bat this did not last long. Broomball confirmed the Russian de mand for Argentine wheat, as cabled on Feb ruary 17, but said consummation of business would be attended witb. difficulties. It is enough for us to know that Russia Is In any such posi tion as to be even considering such a move. Wβ expect a gradually advancing market. price. The Merger received but scant rapport and ruled weak all day at 79c. Following a gain on the New York exchange, Goldfleld consolidated moved up to $2.35, but the advance was not maintained, for the rUe brought out a selling movement which, while of ■mall proportions, was sufficient to carry the price below Wednesday's level. Atlanta gold at 16c, while the other low priced Usuee of the group were neglected. Nevada Hill* waa In good request at $1.20 all day, and email eales were even made at an advance over that figure. Feb. 20.—Revival of export demand in the west for shipment by way of the gulf gave the wheat market today an upward slant. The close was nervous at a shadp to is@%e over last night. Corn made a net gain of and oats l-ie<H>i4c. In provisions the outcome varied from 5<574c decline to a rise of 214 c. Owing to rain or snow extending from Okla homa to South Dakota, wheat at first took a down turn. The market whs bearishly effected also by predictions that world shipments for the week would be large. For the time being, north western reports of decreased arrivals formed the only offset in favor of the bulls. News that for eigners were buying wheat in Omaha to be routed ria New Orleans effected a complete change In pit sentiment. The result was to add quickly %c to prices here, and this notwithstanding that a cold wave was patting an end to the deposit of moisture in portions r>f the winter crop belt. However, a group of big houses with free ordere to sell at any further advance brought about a, feeling of uncertainty as trading came to an end. Primnrr receipts were 7"2.000 bushels against a holiday last year. Clearances of wheat end flour equaled 417.000 bushels. Corn found friends when wheat begun t<* ascend. Besides. ther<» were complaints that rural hauling was bandieaped by the softnes* of roads. Oats were firmer on account of belief tliat the weather was unfavorable for marketing, though, less so than for corn. Provisions responded later In the session to the strength shown by grain. Earlier the bean were in control because of the liberal ran of hogs here and et otber leading points. CHICAGO, Feb. 20.— E. F. Hntton ft Co. , * wire says: "Wheat—Not much character to the trade to day. The market has covered about the mim range as yesterday, with prices about as mucb higher as lower than yesterday's close, the low figures coming first. The sale of 123.000 bnin els from Omaha for export, via New Orleane, done today, had some effect in helping value*, although it developed that It was a sacrifice •*!• to make room for corn and was nearly %o lower than a sale of 25.000 bushels of the same grade. No. 2 hard. Sales of 35 loads of Manitoba wheat have been reported sold late yesterday and today /or export. On account of a holiday a year age, and the fact that receipts a week age were rot two days, the figures on primary receipts, etc., are worthless today. Export clearance* harm been small —87.000 bnehele of wheat and floor. Although the official weather map aa of T a. m. showed no measurable precipitation In Kansas, there were light snows shown In Nebraska and heavier in Colorado. Also, there were many private messages showing snow or rainfall ex tending from South Dakota to Oklahoma, lncliv sire. There has been a little better inquiry te» day for cash wheat, but aetnal sales have n«| been Important. Sales reported were 80,00 v bushels. Hershey, Neb., reports two inches nt snow and still snowing at 1 p. m. Cables tola of fnrther rains in India. "Corn at no time sold more than a fractlosj below yesterday's close, and It responded late in the session to the advance In wheat, dosing higher. The weather was mild over the core belt, which means soft roads, without the addi tion of rains, which are forecasted. Meanwhile, however. Texas has tried to sell corn In Kansas! City. Seaboard claims it is getting its supplies' from Indiana, and there has been little done her* on domestic or export account. Argentine ship ments for the week are estimated light at 860.* 000 bushels, against none a year ago. Caab sales reported here were 142.000 bushels. "Oats have been quite dull, with prices keep- Ing steady to a little over yesterday's close. Limited trade on shipping account. The weather is unfavorable for marketing, but less so than for corn. Sales reported were 210.000 bushels. "Provisions were easier most of the day, re» spondlng late In the session to the strength) shown In grains. ERrly declines were due to the large run of hogs here and the drop of RftllOo at the yard*. Early decline brought some rather conservative and substantial buying of proviiions, which helped late values." Cnmh Grain and Prorfsjfona CHICAGO.
