in the shape of a larger bar.
]f a real reason for the decline of
our factories was sought It would be
better to go Into the root of the sub
ject, rather than into so superficial a
reason as that of general acceptabil
ity—in which the local eoaps have eas
ily been the victors. Deeper in the
subject, we come up with the fortuitl
ous year for the outside manufacturers
of 1906 when, through a cruel stroke of
fate, a great fire wiped out all of San
Francisco's business and manufactur
ing districts. The factories were set
back years in development. They lost
track of customers. The outside in
terests made splendid strides in re
gaining, - permanently, the trade of the
California retailers. Since then the
next great reason for their dominance
of the soap trade has been their fa
cilities for national advertising. No
California manufacturer could utilize
a medium of national circulation unless
he was actively doing business with
retailers in all parts of fhe nation.
An additional reason Is to be found
In the general apathy or indifference
on the part of the consuming public
regarding the buying of goods of Cali
fornia factories. The local manufac
turers in every line and particularly
the soap makers, rest their plea on the
condition of "price and quality being
equal." but even this eminently fair
proposal i? not accepted by the general
mass of consumers. They do not seem
to realize that every time they make a
purchase of a California product they
fldd to the wealth of their own state,
add to the wage paying fund of our
factories, aid in providing employment
and comforts for their neighbors.
On this page appear two pictures of
soap factories, each of which covers an
entire block. One is the Standard Soap
company of West Berkeley, which is ,
the largest soap manufactory in the
west and which makes glycerin an im
portant by-product, and the other is the
Fischbeck Soap company, located at
Seventeenth and Rhode Island streets,
San Francisco, one of the pioneer San
Francisco soap factories.
There are label advertisements of
tliese factories appearing on, this , page,
as also of Newell and Brother Soap
company,' makers of Mikado soap, with
a factory at San Bruno avenue and
Army street. All of these labels have
a value in The Call office and should
be saved and presented. Valuable pre
miums and prizes are given in ex
change for these labels.

Rules for The Call's Label
Gathering Campaign
Rule I—Labels and Sales Slips must be of goods advertised on this
page, have their cost price marked on the margin, and must
be presented at THE CALL'S label department Saturday
afternoons, only.
Rule 2—Labels and Sales Slips representing SI.OO worth of purchases
will entitle their owners to one CERTIFICATE. $10.00 worth
•ten CERTIFICATES, etc. Certificates are redeemable by
THE CALL in premiums—see list.
Rule 3—Labels and Sales Slips must be gathered in the process of,
legitimate consumption among families. This rule will be
strtctlv interpreted. Labels coming from improper sources,
such as manufacturers, printers, etc., will not be accepted.
This measure is taken for the protection of all participants.
EXTRA TALLIES.
The value of each label or sales slip can be increased 20 per cent
if it is accompanied by its ad clipped from this page. So keep THE
CALL'S label page and clip the sds.
RULES FOR THE COMPETITIVE PRIZES
(The competitive prizes comprise a motorcycle, gold , watch, $50
in gold, etc.)
Rule A —All persons desiring to try for competitive prizes must enter
their names with THE CALL, so that the standing of con
testants may be published. Contest for competitive honors
will cover a three-year period.
Rule B—Contestants will be credited with all CERTI FICATES cashed
in for prerrmims except when no increase in their standing
has been shown for three months —they must then begin anew.
Rule C—Contestants may enter their names and begin working for
