BUSINESS, COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL SECTION 18 WESTERN PACIFIC FINANCES IMPROVE Gould Line Is Expected to Stand by Itself by 1915 This Year's Surplus Likely to Go Toward New Construction By CI.OVIfS A. FA That the Western Pacific is steadily Improving Its financial position Is gen erally admitted in money circles. It Is* believed that the Gould line will be prepared to stand by itself in 1915 and thus relieve the Denver and Rio Grande, which has guaranteed the .Western Pacific bonds. Good progress is being made in de- | veloping , traffic and the new line is showing up well this year in its fight to support itself. Inasmuch as this year's interest has been provided through the Denver and Rio Grande's recent financing, there is a probability that the "Western Pacific surplus will be* applied to additional construction and betterment. ' ■ ■■• i vv;-\*« ~ *.•;..••»-- , OCKAX SHORE ASSESSMENT , , The action of the Ocean Shore Kail- ; road company in levying an assessment | of, $2.50 per. share to buy equipment and extend its terminal facilities has brought forth the following comment from the Wall Street Journal: "One of the disadvantages of owning stock in a California corporation is seen in a notice just sent out by the Ocean Shore Railroad company of an assessment of $2.50 a share on its Btock, the proceeds to be used, to meet outstanding obligations, which must be paid. . "Some time ago the company applied to the state railroad commission for authority to issue $700,000 of bonds to meet obligations soon falling due. Be cause of litigation in which the com pany is involved, the commission de ferred action on the application until the pending suits are decided. As the company had to meet payments for equipment and land purchases, the assessment. was made on the stock holders. While this action is seldom taken by a corporation, it is provided for by the laws of California." * # * ELECTRICITY IN" Oil- FIELDS How electrical energy is utilized in California oil fields is told in an arti cle by A. Emory Wlshon in the San .Toaquin Light and Power company's magazine for April. Thirty-nine com panies are using electricity for driv ing 669 pumning wells. , It is declared electricity affords a saving of from 50 to 75 per cent in operating costs. There is another article in the mag azine showine: how electricity is pumD ins: water for the irrigation of the hitherto unproductive lands around Mendota on the west side of the San Joaquin. - *3 * ♦ [*} C.WAXEA DIVIDEND PASSED According to-'the'private wire of E. F. Hutton & en. yesterday, the Greene Cananea Copper company passed its dividend yesterday. This action is due in part to the revolutionary troubles In Mexico. * * * Rl'Ml/EY FINANCING There is excellent authority for stat ing that the Rumlev company is ne gotiating for a loan of about $5,000,000. "which probably will be forthcoming: to tide the corporation over until the fall, according. to ' the private ■ wire of J. C. Corn finished a shade up to a shade down. Oats closed : M @ ; .' lower to 'sc higher/ Provisions were \at a net loss of I%€ to 15c. i- The war situation, in Us latest de velopment, brought nervousness to traders and induced buying ■ 6f - wheat that rallied prices to the opening fig ures of the day. A considerable lower ing of values had? taken place before i the war scare made itself felt, the main influence in v the depression being an entanglement Involving export sales. A deadlock between English buyers and - American exporters -, is reported over the question of payment for , ca J" goes. A recent rule was adopted d> exporters that payments shall he on sight draft, but -. the English trade in sists on a 60 day basis.... " , The weak tone of the wheat; mark* prior to the final ■ upturn ; was increased by the fine domestic crop outlook. ■V Primary receipts of wheat today were 587.000 bushels; last year 323.000: bu shels. Seaboard : clearances of wheat and flour equaled = 606.000 bushel?. Fine weather made a heavy corn market most of the day. : Near tne close there was a : somewhat oversold condition and prices made a .slight, rally. Bate covering by shorts: helped oats, which most of the day had been weak. , J ' .*.,»„ ■ ■■',■;; Speculative buying; gave strength to provisions for a time, but values late" eased off. partly in sympathy With weakening of prices at the yards, and partly by reason of a considerable in crease in the world's lard : stock. Mutton's Chicago Advices "Wheat —Heavy tone in . wheat in - . fluenced by lower cables, lack of note worthy export or domestic merehanni' ing demand, and rainfall In Nebraska. Kansas and South Dakota. Some rally from low point came late in the day be cause of war news embodied in report that Montenegro had annexed Scutari and defied the powers, and because many smaller traders -had- oversold. Is a deadlock between . North American exporters and United Kingdom im porters , because the former insist un<jn cash instead of 60. days , time on grain sales. Cash markets meanwhile wp-o weak in all directions. One of th" crop experts now in the field renor ts chinch bug damage in northern Okla homa on fin extensive scale. - \ "Corn— Hea\-y, with popular senti ment bearish most of the day, but th" market ultimately became oversold aH rallied to a shade above yesterday <= closing level. Wheat i weakness _ also affected corn much of the morning. —Fine growing weather, along with weakness ;in corn and Wheat, counted against prices early, but as in other-grains, the selling was overdone and shorts covered on rallies later. • "Provisions —Lower all around, with trade of fair proportions.
