BUSINESS, COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL SECTION FRESH FRUITS IN INCREASED SUPPLY Stocks Becoming Heavier and Variety Greater as Season Advances -' -?•??■--? ■-. ■. ■ -.. - • .. . ■ a.--'- -..---..- :; V Saturday's Weakness in But ter Proves Temporary; Prices Go Up Again The wholesale fruit market started the new week with conditions generally against sellers?, whose troubles were added to by"heavyv arrivals of poor quality orchard fruits and the return; of . cool weather, which. had a ? tendency; to lessen the; consumptive demand and made price reductions' in several lines imperative. Rain damaged cherries were in evidence every where,V apricots had a more or less weather beaten ap pearance and strawberries continued to show effects of the soaking the patches in nearby districts received last week. Prices for cherries in bulk had a de cided slump, dealers being obliged to accept low bids for general offerings in order to keep stocks moving. The can ners were indifferent buyers at ? 2@3c for blacks and soft whites and 3@4c for Royal «Annes, while hucksters and retail tradesmen did not want to pay much more for anything that showed the least trace of dampness. Packed lots were relatively firmer than loose . fruit, there being a good snipping In ■m\ uuiry for blacks and Royal Anneu in "small packages. Pringle and seedling apricots were offered freely at weak and unsustained rates, and for the first time this season there was an unwieldy surplus uncared for at the close, while choice Royals from the ' Newcastle region * found prompt sale at a substantial premium. Plums were in larger supply and greater variety, but sales were slow, owing to the greenness and general „ unattractlveness of the offerings, while "'increased receipts of new apples, figs, peaches and red currants and ~ the ar , rival of small lots of cantaloupes and watermelons indicated that the market would soon be loaded up with? all seasonal descriptions. Cantaloupes from the southern California valleys sold at $2@2.50 for "special" or small crates and $6 @S for larger packages, "Watermelons, the first of , the season, from the same region, were on sale at To a pound. Receipts of strawberries were cut down to less than 1,000 chests, ~ and although prices for offerings in good condition were well maintained in the regular trade, the market was eas£ on the whole, with receivers dependent on the canners for an outlet for surplus stocks. The first raspberries from the Santa Clara region arrived from Agnews and found prompt sale at the rate of $12@14 a chest. Gooseberries were in fair demand, but sellers had some difficulty in maintaining prices, ■wing to a marked increase in the ar rivals. Increased arrivals of choice green corn from Brentwood caused another drop in prices for that vegetable and practically stopped the sale of "Winters and Coachella lots. Asparagus weak ened again on liberal arrivals -over Sunday and a slackening up in the trade. The canners offered 50 cents a box for the cream of the offerings and tredesmen were demanding concessions, which receivers were willing to make to prevent carrying a big sur plus over. Bay peas dragged at low rates, while the Half Moon bay product continued to find prompt sale at com paratively high prices. String beans end summer squash were firm and higher on decreased arrivals. New po tatoes and onions were in ample supply -with prices merely steady, while old crop offerings of both met with a lim ited inquiry. jssf Speculative trade in barley was of a "quiet desultory character in the grain pit, with business confined to the De cember option, which sold off sharply and closed weak. There was very lit tle life to the cash grain market,-but traders on the selling end of things . were generally firm in their views and showed np disposition to urge business at the expense of values. Aside from an advance in red oats there . was no » change in the quotations for spot grains and prices for feedstuffs were also undisturbed. Saturday's drop in the butter market was followed by a quick reaction yes terday and prices advanced to the same extent that they declined at the close of last week. Although receipts over Sunday were swelled by tha arrival of a regular Humboldt steamer , with a good sized manifest, there seemed to be an outlet for everything c offered on the exchange and at the close of the call buyers were bidding the quoted prices for further supplies. Cheese, too, was firm with both grades of new California flats half a cent higher. Receipts of eggs over Sunday were well up to the normal, but the trade was complaining of a scarcity of strictly first quality offerings. Extras were half a cent higher and *it was the consensus of opinion along the street that the period of low prices was over. ■ Two newly arrived cars of eastern hens and part of a car that was held * over from last week went on sale yesterday. The demand was merely fair and receivers were unable to effect Adelaide Star Mines, Limited Sale of Reduction Plant Tenders are invited for the purchase of the plant in rela tion to the Smelter, Concen trator and Sampling Works of the abore company, situated at Golconda, ?ier.
