accompanied -, by C. Montague Cooke,
curator at Bernice Pau&hl Bishop mu
seum: Prof. J. F. C. Rock, botanist at
the College of Hawaii and the govern
ment nursery, and Gerrit P. Wilder,
well known local amateur scientist
and botanical enthusiast, will leav*
this week for Judge Cooper's recently
acquired possession, 1 Palmyra island.
This property was the subject of much
comment last year, when a report was
circulated that attempt! were being
made by i the British government to
claim the island and establish a coal
ing station, resulting in a hurried trip
of the United States ship "West Vir
ginia under sealed order to ascertain
the veracity of the report, which
proved groundless.
The group, which consist* of .in small
coral islands, Is said to be the repos
itory for much buccaneer wealth de
posited in the days of piracy on the
Pacific, and it Is the intention of the
party to do a little exploring for dub
loons, and also do botanical research
work. : * y

feet In a military biplane and saved
from being: crushed! to death when his
heel.caught between a steering wire
and a strut, /was the thrilling: experi
ence of ; Captain P. B. Hennessey, one
of the daring' military pilots 'attached
to the first aero squadron at North isl
and yesterday. He had attained a high
altitude when his plane suddenly
pitched forward and threw him out
of his seat. Hie " right foot became
caught in the wires which control the
ailerons.
Captain Hennessy, however, suc
ceeded in "wrenching; his foot free, re
gained his Beat in spite of the d'.itv
plunge of the machine, and righted it
within 200 feet of the water. Hβ said
the machine dropped €00 feet before he
regained control.

HANFORD. July 10.—While enjoying:
a dance at the celebration in Lemoore
near this city on the evening of the
fourth of July Thomas Corkery of Han
ford stepped out into the dark to a
porch which had no railing: around it
and i fell ; to the ground, a distance of
14 feet. His ankle was broken and he
lay two . hours before he could draw
any one's attention to him. The bone
protruded from the flesh end was
driven into the ground several Inches,
becoming infected. He died today at
the sanatorium in this city of gangrene.
He was single, a native of Modesto, and
leaves parents, two sisters and one
brother. Hβ was 40 years old. '-
