Th*> Southern Pacific company report? • the movement over Its lines eastward' of 129 cars during three days of this month, and states that shipments are now going forward at the rate of from 40 to 60 cars daily. WALL STREET IS AT A STANDSTILL Only 64,000 Shares Sold, Making It Dullest Day Since May 27, 1896 Brokers Wait for Something to Turn Up—Speculation Forces Spent NEW YORK. July 11.—It is neces sary to go ■back over a Ion? stretch of years to find another day as dull as to day in the stock market. The total of transactions was 64,400 shares, th* smallest amount traded in on any full day since ! May 1596. Stock market operators spent the day in waiting: for something: to happen. Apparently the forces which have been determining the course of speculation and price "'movements have spent ; them selves, leaving the market at a stand still. ■'■;-.:.-. .-■, _' ' With tariff and currency legislation, the possibility of a strike on the east ern railroads, and the = Balkan war hanging over the market, speculators are not inclined to take on new line." for either account, and as the; day was barren of news upon which to base operations trading came almost to a halt. ■~ _ , The drift of prices was downward, but bear traders made no attempt to press - their advantage, and :In most cases losses were limited to fractions. Southern Pacific sold off more easily than the rest of the list. Lower prices of copper metal In Lon don, owing , to poor trade conditions arising from the Balkan disturbances, found, reflection here in the heaviness of the copper stocks, particularly Smelting. *'";. ,'' New York Central sold early In the day at 95 U. a new low record for the year, and Chesapeake and Ohio, at 51 I*,1*, also reached a new low point. Another cash loss by ■ the banks was forecast by the week's known movements of '-cur-; rency. A decline of $5,000,000 to $7.-• 000.000 was indicated. In addition to the :,loss of /, $5,000,000 ■& gold : shipped abroad the interior movement was less favorable to »New York. ' Had it not been for $1,000,000 gold received from Canada this week th« banks would have shown a .loss on direct operations with the interior. -Al though it Is unusually early- for the > currency to be moving into the inter ior, a turn in the movement was; ap parent this week after a long suc cession of heavy gains. . Compared with previous 'weeks the inflow decidedly smaller, while th« direct ' exoress shipments were about twice as large as last week. .Bonds were affected slightly by the sagging of sstocks. Total sales, par value. $1,612,000. - United States 4s registered declined- M and v the 2s registered and Panama 3s; V 2 on call. ■ 'V Huston's New York Letter No special feature to today's'market except the extreme dullness that pre ! vailed during the greater part of the j session.
