FEDERAL REPORT GIVES STRENGTH But Trade Is Dull in Wheat on the Chicago Market CHICAGO, Oct. 10.—Trade waa dull in wheat at the opening this morning, but there was an undercurrent of strength in the face of a bearish government report issued last even ing. Northwestern receipts were smaller, as were Argentine shipments. Corn was unsettled, December being off as much as lc. Oats were 1 ,4@%c lower. BROOXKALL'S GRAIN CABLES LIVERPOOL, Oct. 10.—Wheat opened % low er, influenced by weaker Winnipeg cables and a forecast of larger Russian shipments this week and larger world's shipments. The American government report waa considered slightly bear ish, and advices from Argentina continue favor able, with a liberal Canadian offer. These factors, however, ofily served to cause momen-. tary depression, and following the opening there was covering by shorts. There is an Improved demand for Manitoba grades, and parcels are more steadily held. At 1:30 the market waa steady and nnchanged to % higher than yester day. Corn —The flrmneas in American cables waa offset here by continued liberal Argentine ship ments, and opening values were % lower. Fol lowing the opening there waa a further decline of %0% on weakness In spot, heavy arrivals for three days, as officially reported, and the weakness of Danublan offers. There was some covering at this lejrel In December. At 1:30 p. m. tbe market was easy and %0% lower than yesterday. Argentine shipments: -Wheat —This week, 712.000 bushels; last week. 480.000; last year, 1,224.000. Corn—This week. 4,464,000 bushels; last week. 5,415.000; last year, 6,154,000. Argentina—Wheat shipments as recorded weekly are larger than expected, and the rea son Is ascribed to the fact that farmers are marketing closely of old reserves owing to favorable prospects for the new crop. A review of the report gives an aggregate of the five leading grains of 4.456.000.000 bushels, an increase of 82,000,000 bushels over the Septem ber estimate, but a decrease of 1,077, --000,000 bushels, or 19.5 per cent from final returns of last year's record yield. Corn improved 22,000,000 bush els last month, but is 752,000.000 bushels under last year. The seven surplus states have 1,174,000,000 bush els, or 5,000,000 bushels more than a month ago, and 653,000.000 bushels under last year. The wheat crop ia the largest on record, 753,000,000 bushels, or 23,000,000 bushels more than last year, and 5,000,000 bushels in excess of the record yield of 1901. The spring wheat crop is the same as last month, but 78.000,000 bushels short of last year's big yield. The oats crop is the third largest on rec ord, 1,122,000,000 bushels, increaaing 56,000,000 bushels over the September estimate. The hay crop is estimated at 63,000,000 tons, against 73,000,000 tons a year ago. * # * Commercial failures in the Pacific states for the first nine months of 1913, according to Dun's Review, make an extremely indifferent com parison with those of the same period last year, defaults numbering 1,262, with liabilities aggregating $12,329,465, as contrasted with 997 suspensions involving $8,129,849. Washington reports 296 failures, a decrease of 5 compared with last year, with liabilities of $3,339,973, or slightly less than the $3,368,114 of 1912. Oregon and California, how ever, make unfavorable returns, in the former there being 293 suspen sions, with a defaulted indebtedness of $3,510,476, and in the latter 673 for $5,479,016, as contrasted with the 192 defaults for $1,786,343, and the, 501 for 12.975,392, respectively, which occurred In those states in 1912. * # * Following; the issuance of the de partment of agriculture permit to the California Edison company for de velopment of water powers on the Kern river, in the Kern national for est reserve, that company announces that the development will consist of four power plants of modern con struction with conduit lines entirely in tunnels. Southern California Edi son now operates fleven hydro-elec tric plants, one of these being on the t Kerrf river and five in the Angeles forest reserve, the seventh plant being on private lands. The six plants on government lands are capable of de veloping 37,000 horse power, but to supplement this power the company has several steam power plants of an aggregate capacity of 54,000 norse power. While construction of dams will not be expensive, lt will require much time to construct the conduits, and for this reason the company has almost 12 years in which to complete the four plants.
