Samuels, who, in addition to being a member of the National Geographic society and a lawyer, is the lady's husband. The whole scheme originated in the mind of an imaginative Dress agent, but before the "stunt" endad, his hair had threatened to turn white. The plan | was that Amy Evans, a pretty Welsh singer; Alice Zepelli of Italy. Louise Berat of France and Miss Riegelman should perform some daring act to show the inherent bravery of their countrywomen, and, incidentally, to reflect glory on the opera company on Its way from Philadelphia to Chi cago. Bryant, who has made a study of the burrowing pests for the University of California. Bryant has learned that at night tb« gophers, supposed to re main in their tunnels, come to the surface of the earth and forage for food. When some street repairs were being made in Berkeley Bryant dis covered the habit of the gophers. A strip of crude oil was left one night along an excavation. Next morning Bryant found 50 gophers trapped ln the sticky substance. Here is what Bryant now suggests. If a strip of oil two feet wide will trap 50 gophers in one night in Berkeley, why will not such a strip capture gophers migrating into an orange grove? BAIRD WOODLAND, Dec. s.—One of the most bitter legal battles ever fought in this section of the state will be staged in a few days, when real action begins ln the suit of the vestrymen of St. Luke's Episcopal church against the "fighting parson," the Rev. Ed ward John Baird. It Is the purpose of the action to oust tlie minister from the church, to prohibit him from holding further services, to recover the church prop erty now held by him and to cause the delivery of the property to the vestry men. In opposition to this the Rev. Mr. Baird says he will continue to hold services in St. Luke's church even if he preaches to empty pews. The pas tor also says that his wife, who fled from him. will shortly return and that there will be a reconciliation. f ■ " Absolutely V 2 Original Price .
