a dollar. Perhaps she doesn't
really want the two cents change,
but If she doesn't get it more than
likely she will feel that she has
not been juatly treated. On the
otb.er hand a merchant can not
afford-to charge her only 95 cents.
Therefore, the cent Is necessary.

that has been entirely forgotten

Whirlwind Finish in
Carnival Queen Race
The contest for queen of the mid
winter carnival, which will be held
from December 9 to 14 near the Six
teenth street station under the aus
pices of the West Sixteenth Street
Improvement association, has nar
rowed down to three candidates, who
are making a whirlwind finish, the
result of which will be known when
the final votes are counted Saturday
evening. Miss Elisabeth Glaxer leads
with 22,500 votes. Miss Nora Sulli
van is second with 20,600, Miss Alice
Hove third with 17,500, Miss Evelyn
Medo fourth with 16,600, Miss Mar
garet Brown fifth with 12.200 and
Miss Minnie Smith sixth with 10.000.

FUEL CASES

The federal grand Jury this after
noon continued ltß investigations
into the alleged Coal frauds against
the governtnent and has before It
additional evidence gathered from the
inspection of the books of the West
ern Fuel company and the Pacific
Mall.
Special Treasury Agent Tidwell and
several assistants have been making
a close examination of the documents
ln conjunction with Special Prosecu
tors Matt I. Sullivan and Theodore
J. Roche.
It is understood that the govern
ment hopes to Introduce evidence from
the books of the two concerns that
will lead to indictments against of
ficials of both as well as against for
mer employes of the customs office.
A triple alliance is said to have been
in vogue, wherein employes of the
two companies defrauded their own
concerns by false Weighing of coal as
well as the government.

formed.

woman or girl needs to come here
without being offered the protection
of the good men and women of Cali

The S. P. G. A., foreseeing trouble
ahead for the workhorse during the
rainy season, has provided several
hundred burlap overshoes, which are
strapped over the hoofs to prevent
slipping. Though they give all horses
a I'erc heron appearance, they are be
ing welcomed by drivers.
KILLS ONE MAN,
WOUNDS 5 MORE
SACRAMENTO. Dec. s.—After a
dispute over a bill John Borak. an
aged carpenter, shot and killed Er
nest Schmerher, proprietor of the
.Vienna saloon in Second street at 6
o'clock yesterday evening. He then
fired at every one who atempted to
enter the place and before the smoke
had cleared two policemen and three
other persons wer*» shot.
Borak was finally captured after
many policemen had fired into the
saloon, forcing him to run out.
Aside from Schmerber, the slain
man. Policeman Martin Pennish was
shot through the left leg; Policeman
Gbtorff* Estell In the left leg, H. F.
Wheat, a book keeper, ln the right
thigh; Elwood Paul, a molder, ln the
left leg, and William Slack through
both thighs.

of grooms, gardeners, butlers and
valets. Even the housemaids have

a garden hose with the greatest pos
