Is published every Saturday monun". ' 11. T. 81ake..... Editor and Proprietor. SATI liDAY. FEBRUARY f», 1881. STATE NEWS. Tlie Carter house at Alamosa was totally dost j oyed by tire last week. The Plunkett’s are playing in towns in the northern part of tlie P state. 1 A new town called Clayton lias been started in 'the KcrbcV Creek mining district. ; Boulder Herald': A gentleman liv ing near dmnestown reports over 100 inches ot snow this winter. Last Saturday morning: the feed and grain store of Johnucy fcjuxe was completely destroyed by lire, in Silv er Cfifi. Mark L. Blunt lias been appointed register of the U. S. land ollicc at Pueblo vice Ford Bnrndollar. Miss Mary A. Meeker, daughter of the late N. C. Sleeker, was married in Greeley last week to W. S. Fuller ton. Alamosa Independent, 29: The weather has boon very cold this week, reaching :>2 degrees below zero Sim ony night. Ouray Times: The Mendota ore carries brittle, native and wire silver and is being worked constantly under lease. This is one of the most won derful mines in this country. Fair piny Finnic: Parties down from Buckskin gulch report the snow piling up enormously in that gulch. Some say it is twenty feet deep on the level, but this can only veler to the extreme upper end. About live hundred cattle are re ported dead-on the lino of the Atchi son, Topeka &■ Sania Fc, between Granada, Colorado, and Dodge City, Kausas. The snow has been so deep that the cattle have starved. Miss Minnie Pitineo ot Greeley and Miss Nellie Curtiss of Topeka, Kan sas, have signed articles of agreement to ride a twenty mile race for £5,000 a side on the grounds of the Denver Jocky club ou the 20th day of May. Silver Cliff Republican : A speci men of horn silver was taken out of the Ilacine Boy mine yesterday which is almost ns large as a man’s fist. It is solid horn silver and one of the finest specimens ever taken from the mine. Leadvillc Chronicle : Many people living in this high altitude have not ed with surprise that water freezing in fragile vessels does not crack or break them. Water may be left in n delicate glass goblet and be found next morning frozen a sol id mass and j et the glass is entirely unbroken. Ouray Muldoon : A few days ago a parly of engineers came to the agency to survey a route for the Den ver «fc Kio Grande railroad. They intended going down on the reserva tion but w« re stopped by Agent Ber ry. The chief engineer went over to Lake to telegraph for instructions and the balance ot * the party are en camped at the Uucompahgre bridge. Buena Yistjj, Times: The weather is execrable. First it snows, then turns cold enough to freeze the mer cury in the thermometer, then thaws a while}'snow s ngnjn and so on through the disagreeable routine. Ranchmen who have lived in this valley for 10 years, say it is the worst winter they have known in that time. Stock is suffering severely and hay is in de mand at increased prices. ( Boulder Iferald: Mr. Brainard showed us last week a mortgage made by the Denver, Western & Pa cific railway company to the Fanners’ Loan & Trust company f0r57,500,000. Jt is by far the largest mortgage ever recorded in this county and is record ed in book 05 of the Boulder county records. The company making the mortgage is to build a railroad from Denver to Boulder and Longmont, and further north or west if desired^ Pueblo Chieftain: Carl Wulstcn, the mining engineer, was in town yesterday on ids way to Deliver. Mr. Wulsteu reports concerning the Game Ridge mining property that for 70!* foot in length, counting cast from the Black Tail shaft, the top ore, which was never considered worth much, is now proven by surface cuts to be ver\ \aluabie for ut least a hun dred feet in depth. The management has determined to quarry the whole hundred l'eet down bodily. EI Paso. From tlic Santa Fo New Mexican. Mr. Juda, of Z. .‘Staub & iiro., who has recently returned from El Paso, gives u very glowing account of Unit place and its prospect for. future greatness. Oe says that an immense amount of business is already being done there, and the town is us lively as possible, such business as brick making aud the preparation of lum ber and other building material be ing carried on on a large scale. Very different is Air. Jtida's account from the general idea that the place is overrun by strangers, aud that there are ten men there for every one man’s work. It is true that the town is full of fortune seekers, but those who are there are Uv no means at a loss for something to do. The railroads are all working rapidly toward El Paso, and two depots have been located. The Texas Pacific and the Southern Pacific will have the same depot, which will be situated in the town oi Franklin, generally know by persons nt a distance as El l*aso. The build ings will be large aud expensive, and their erection will furnish employ ment to a very large number of men. The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Ft road hue selected a site for its depot, about a mile from Franklin, and will put up its buildings, it is said as soon as possible. Mr. Juda says that it is the opinion of persons, in a position to know, that in six months El Paso will be the finest place in the south west. Angry Apaches. l'rom h Special to tbe laxh Gazette. San Mahcial, New Mexico, Janu ary 24.—J. M. Jtobhison and Williams, miners, arrived here this afternoon from the Hlack range. Two more miners also came in a little later. They report many prospectors leav ii>K- A party ot Mexicans left. Sunday hunting for the Mexican wood-cutters and found them butchered. Two Mexlcuu sheep herders were found murdered near Cuchilht Ncgru. The mail driver to Hillsboro got drunk, and when he arrived at San Josj could not go any further. Jlc hired a Mexican to drive the buck board, who was killed Sunday after noon six miles beyond San Jose. The mail was ritlcd. A party of eighteen went for the body and saw Indians in the rocks. A few shots were lircd but no one was hurt. It is suspected that a white man has been buying ammunition hero for the Indians. It is rumored here that the Indians attacked Hillsboro, and a tight is now going on. Only t wo prospectors were killed ill Black llange so l'ar as known. Their names are Overton and McDonald, from Lake, Arizona. It is reported that tlie stage from Cummings has been taken in. There are conflicting reports of the number killed. Mother Shipton's Prophecy. A Brooklyn, N.Y.,gentleman writ ing'to the New York Sun, says: In the Sun of to-dnv 1 saw an account of the prophecy of one Mother Ship ton, professing to have been made some two or three hundred years ago. I would like you to inform those who may yet feel somewhat timid about it, that the so-called prophecy was a clever fraud, perpe trated only a tow years ago by one Charles liindley of Brighton, Eng land.
