Presbyterian Anniversary.
U'i'dufcadu). August lKth. was the
occasion of an entertainment and re
union at the First Presbyterian church
in honor of the 25th anniversary of its
organization. A program consisting
of carefully prepared papers and talks
interspersed with music, was given.
.1. K. Brewster, an elder in the church
! for twenty-five years, gave an account
of its organization. Miss Certrude
McKissick read a history of the lirst
( ten years of the church, written by her
mother. Mr. Rudd submitted a lengthy
poem which was read by Mr. Anson
Rudd. The poem is published in full.
A history of the second ten years was
read by Judge Dale. S. If. Atwater
gave a history of the last live yeurs.
| Vocal music was furnished by Mrs.
Lewis and Miss McKissick. After the
program was finished refreshments
were server! and a social time was en
1 joyed.
Far eastward in a beauteous vale
And fanned by many a spicy Kale.
A garden lay, embosomed all
Among the palms and cedars t**ll.
1 Yountr Adam in creation's morn;
Ere yet a thought of sin was born.
Estatlc in the garden stood.
His ev'ry thought and wish was good.
No vain desire bis bosom enter’d.
His hopes of bliss on God was center’d.
Ambrosial galea ins cheeks caress’d,
With visions bright, his dreams were
bless’d.
His bed was wove of fairest flowers
That fadeless bloomed in sylvan bower*.
The air was jubjlant with song.
As twilight did the day prolong.
With warblers from each wooded vale.
Which, with tbeir vespers came to hail
The last great clowning work of God,
Who rested then, and said ’twaa good.
His food wsa fruit of choicest kind.
Only for Paradise design'd.
The choice of wlUch to him was given
By the consenting voice of Heaven;
Save o. the tree of good and evil
As that woaid send him to the devil;
Now Adam stood supremely bleaa’d
By all Ibe hosts of Heaven caress’d.
Until one day he took to gaping
When straight wav he was caught a nap
ping.
Waen fro »i his aide a rib was taken,
< How strange it is he did not waken.
And froui the crooked bone we And
A nondescript call’d womankind.
O luckless hap for ev’ry sinner.
Was Adam's sleeping a'ter dinner.
’Twaa then the misery began.
Of esch and every mortal man;
Not that the woman was a bieaslng.
Well worth the while of his ■ aressing.
But that her rights, notions should prove
A curse and blight to Adam's love.
Fur soon she tired of Adam's rule.
Amt soon caus'd him to play the fool:
As you all know wo lack the grace.
When there's a woman in the case.
To use the little wit we’ve got
Bo 'twill avail us on (he spot.
As men are still their humble slaves.
Who And rest only In their graves.
They hold us still within their grapple.
As ev’ry Eve has got an apple
To tempt them when they’ve laid a plan
To capture some deluded man.
But to proceed and reach the fall
That trail'd the serpent o'er us all.
The story’s this, in wand’rlng round.
Eve tread upon forbidden ground.
Where grew the tree whose light and
knowledge
Could ne'er have been obtained at college.
And *iuoug its branches spied a snake.
Politely asking her to take
From off the tree, a tempting apple.
That he might get her In his grapple.
And she not being posted In
The way the Devil managed sin.
His specious arguments soon wou
The woman, and the deed was done.
As well the serpent knew, the fate
Of Adam, when his trusted mate
Should coax and wheedle him to take.
The version of the wily snake.
Rattier than the express’d condition
On which be gained his high position
Of gardener in Paradise—
A place that we'd consider nice,
but when the Lord came 'round to see
Who'd stolen apples from His tree.
Adam, of course, said he was hoaxed.
And told bow Eve cajoled and coaxed
With more devices than a Yankee.
Until! bis brain was blurred and cranky.
Then shoved the fruit under his nose.
It ttmell'd so good, he said here goes.
I’ll trust this woman thou has given
Though It ahouid bar my way to Heaven
But. said the Lord. I warn’d yon once.
And If yon’re auch a silly dunce
As to be wheedled by a woman.
I'll now, since you know good from evil.
Just send you out to fight the devil.
But you will never have to roam.
Your battlefielda will be at home.
Then straightway o’er the garden wall
The Lord pitched thorn—the snake and all.
And told them that their living now
Tbey’d have to got by sweat of brow.
Thus ended Adam's blissful state.
Which left him with an addled pate
With Kve to discipline, in turn
To try from them the anakc to spurn.
An he persistently kept trying
To keep her at cheap counters buying.
Which then In hts financial stress.
And her extravagance In dress.
(As she already had more leaves
Than preachers here have gather’d
sheaves.)
Beside be had a home to make.
A place where he could safely take
The future prospects and their mother.
And for the comfort of each other.
To make provisions for the larder.
For which he found the task much harder
Since he had lost ’’poatah” as warden
Within the Lord's prolific garden.
Bat sltho’ Adam's lot was hard.
From this great privilege debar'd.
Yet all hia woe and toll and trouble
And mental pain, was but a bubble
Compared with what his progeny
In after years was doom'd to see.
And sll this woe and toll and strife
Came through perverseuess of his wife.
Poor Adam, ’twas a fatal fall
For him. for us a midnight pall.
And left us floundering down life’s tide
With that old serpent for s guide.
Thus blindly we esme down the nges.
Getting for sin our promised wages.
Hut I’ll not draw It very fine.
In tracing my ancestral line.
For some wen* bung and some were
strangled
And some in doubtful ways got mangled.
I’ll therefore, leave them In the lurch,
To tell my story of the church.
’Twaa near two thousand years ago
Commenced the end of all our woe.
Up to that time, the serpents power
Was rife In ev’ry cot and bower.
The world was full of bruised heels.
With wounds such as the serpent deals.
With no known remedy to stste
Their pstn and anguish up to date.
But God wbo'U noted all theaa ages.
And kepi a re coni on Ttme'a pages,
Of how the serpent had beguiled
And led astray tils firstborn child
Anti caus’d his grandchildren to stray
From Hint and vittue fsr away.
And often found them in the mood
Denying Uia first fatherhood.
And so He plar.ued as woman first
Had caused His son to be at•<. urs'd.
And consequently, by his fail
•'He trailed the serpent o'er us uii.
Therefore, 'twas meet, as *twns first said.
Her seed should bruise flie serpent's
head.
So unto her a child was Riven,
A princely child, direct from Heaven.
Tho’ crowned with thorns, a might king.
Whose praises all the angels sing.
Whose power on earth made devils
tremble.
Whose precious love made men assent
ble.
To sing His pruifee and tell the story
< >f His greut love and pristine glory.
As He had remedies to cure
The bruised heel and make them pu~c.
Ami ga\ e immunity io all
That lost their Heaven thro' Adam's fall.
If they would trust in Him, and do
All things that He enjoins them to.
Hut as my subject is the church.
I rind in making carefnl search
And study, the apostles were
The first, and should the honors liear.
To form a Presbyterian church.
Which leaves alt others in the lurch.
We’ll now come down to this occasion.
Hoping 'twill make no abrasion.
In this scholastic gem of mine
As to oblivion consign.
I 'nlike a woman, I’ll engage
In truthful words to tell our age.
V\ e’er twenty-rive, the records say.
And if they're right just to a day.
W e’re old enough to wear long dresses.
To paint our cheeks and bang our tresses.
And put on airs and pose and so forth.
Hoping our charms and fame may go
forth.
To heathen ’round utsmt our station.
For their esteem and emulation.
We. therefore, should l»e circumspect.
Our daily walk should be erect.
We’ll let our moderation then
Be widely known unto all men.
Hut I’ll not venture my advice.
Although it may Ik* very nice;
As we have got a paid adviser.
Who is not bashful, nor u miser.
In giving his advice to others.
Whether to strangers or to brothers.
I’ll leave the subject now to those
Wlio'd rather it were told in prose.
They have my sympathy: and hope
They won't in darkness always grope.
And now I'll bid you all u«kk! night.
And hope :he brilliant, dazzling light
Of this effusion will not blind
' vision, so you cannot rind
Your path of duty, which is plain
And clearly marked out in this strain.

Prior to that he was on the New York
