Capital*— fIUWPLUfI saocyooo.- NEGRO MURDERER WILL BE HUNG THIS WEEK Jin Lynn Will Pay the Supreme Penalty of the Law for His Crime Before Twelve O’clock Saturday. He Will Be the Second Colored Man Ever Executed at the Penitentiary Jim Lynn, the negro who shot and killed Sarah James* a 14-year-old white girl, and seriously wounded her mother, Mrs. Julia James, at Pueblo on May 14th, and who a month later was convicted of murder in the first degree before Judge Baser of the Pue blo county district court, will, under the terms of hia sentence, be hung at the penitentiary here sometime during the current week. Lynn has been kept in solitary con finement since his arrival at the pris on on the 15th of June, and has abandoned all hope of intercession by hia friends to secure a new trial, or a postponement of the decree of the court For sometime after his incar ceration Lynn expected that his rela tives and friends would exert them selves in an effort to secure for him a rehearing of the case, or, at least, a temporary stay of execution, but as nothing of that kind has been done to your home \ UTaZA joy-test a ’Buck’s’ uheM A stove or range free WiwseJ a f „ of oil charge m* ■****«.«■. i , .... |lmi M .■ We will be glad to send to your Stly'fcllbSS. -4W °" to gather. It will be recalled that after the murder of hia victim Lynn eluded the officers for several days, but was fln aly located and taken into custody. The citizens of Pueblo were so In flamed by the character of his crime that they broke into the Pueblo jail for the purpose of wreaking vengeance upon him. The authorities, however, had anticipated such a visit and had secretly taken Lynn to Colorado Springs for safe keeping, where he remained securely locked up until his trial In Pueblo three weeks later. The jury selected to hear the case against Lynn were just fifteen min utes in agreeing upon a verdict of guilty, and fixing the death penalty upon him. The records show that while eigh teen men have been hong at the Colo rado state penitentiary only one of them was a colored man. Lynn, will, therefore, be the second of his race to pay the supreme penalty of the law for hia crime; the other one hav ing been William H. Davia, No. 2595, who was hung September 22, 1891, seventeen years ago, by Warden W. A. Smith. Davis, like Lynn, was convict ed and sentenced to death for murder in Pueblo. SOCIALIST EXPLAINS. That the people may know, I wish to announce to the citizens of Fre mont county, that I am not responsible for my name being used In connection with the ticket that was filed with the county clerk of Fremont county on Tuesday, and published in the Canon City Cannon of last week, and said to be the Socialist ticket of the county. I wish to say that the ticket pub lished in the Canon City Cannon, Sep tember 30, is not the Socialist ticket and was not authorized by the Social ist organization, notwithstanding sev eral Socialist names appear on the ticket and in several instances the names were entirely unauthorized, as in case of my own. I was not con sulted in regard to placing my name on the ticket and further did not know that such a ticket had been filed and I believe I voice the sentiments of at least a portion of those So cialists whose names appear on the ticket, when I say, I denounce the whole scheme as a nefarious machine which is the product of designing pol iticians of Freinont county. I hold a certificate of membership in the 8o ciaiitt orgaßftßtkm am proud to say 1 had a Voice la Ik* ■election of delegates of both nor ■late and national ooaveatioaa and I believe I am aa well ad Tilled on how to proceed to plaoe the lMMiHw.ttoan of our Socialist aa those not connect ed with our Socialist organisation. We aura will not have to aak the 'assistance of either of the old parties when we make our count, nomina tions. Properly speaking, the Social ist movement Is not a political part, but Is a social organization tor the uplifting and betterment of mankind. The organization haa a constitution and by-laws which govern all Ita movements, alther county, state or national and given to each Individual member a voice In all nominations and When anv designing polltdan de sires to attack the Socialist movement vou had better chase an open field be hind your own banner In the toll light of the sun tor yon will never find the Socialist! on nay other ground and we will meet either of the other parties on those grounds and on any Issue before the American people.
